Do not forget to core aerate, overseed, and fertilize your lawn before the first frost hits. Core aeration allows the roots of your turf to access nutrients and water more efficiently. Overseeding, particularly with a slice seeding machine, will repair damage from weeds, drought, and animals from the growing season. A good starter fertilizer/winterizer will promote root development during fall.

Watering during a St. Louis summer:
Remember to adjust your sprinkler settings during the our hot and humid summer to a longer duration in each zone, and decrease the frequency of days watering. Complete watering cycles before 11AM to keep lawns from getting damaged. Watering in the afternoons and evenings is not very efficient, and can cause a increase in mold and fungus in your lawn. Lawns need an inch of water each week to stay in peak condition.

Despite the cooler temperatures this week, do not forget to water your lawn and gardens. We are still behind on rainfall since June. Trees, shrubs and lawns need an average of about 1 inch of water a week to sustain growth and remain vibrant.
