🦇 Got Bats? Here’s what you need to know about Northern Michigan’s most common uninvited house guest: the Little Brown Bat!
While these unique mammals play a huge role in our ecosystem by eating insects over our lawns and lakes, they can cause some serious issues when they move into our homes.
Here is a quick breakdown of what to watch out for and how to handle them safely:
🏠 How They Get In
Bats can squeeze through an opening as tiny as a pencil-sized hole! They love to find their way into:
Attic vents, roof vents, and ridge caps
Fascia boards and soffit corners
Chimneys and areas above gutters
Spotting them: Look for bat droppings (guano) or dark rub marks around these areas.
⚠️ The Dangers
Rabies: Bats can carry rabies. If you suspect any direct physical contact has been made, take every precaution and contact a professional immediately.
Histoplasmosis: Accumulated bat guano can pose a respiratory health risk to humans, especially if it gets disturbed.
🚫 Trapping vs. ✅ Exclusion
If you have bats, trapping them is not a biologically sound method, and it's a practice we never use or promote.
Instead, the safe and effective solution is Bat Exclusion. First, we conduct a thorough preliminary exterior inspection to find every single entry point. Then, we use specialized one-way exit devices that allow the bats to safely leave your home on their own, but completely blocks them from re-entering. Finally, we seal, caulk, and screen the structure to keep them out for good!
