We love mulch 😍 it keeps w**ds away, locks in moisture, and makes beds look beautiful. But even mulch can go sideways if it’s not done right. These simple installation mishaps can cause a lot of issues!

💚 Too Thick: More than 3 inches can suffocate roots and keep water from getting through.

🩵 Mulch Volcanoes: Don’t pile mulch up around tree trunks! It traps moisture and invites rot and pests.

💚 Wrong Kind: Cheap mulch can have w**d seeds or even chemicals you don’t want near your plants.

🩵 Too Close to Stems: Keep mulch a couple inches away so plants can breathe and avoid fungal issues.

A little know how goes a long way to keep your landscape healthy and thriving 🌿

🌱 Pro tip: Fluff old mulch occasionally to keep it fresh and avoid matting that repels water.

Summer fertilizing can be tricky business!

Too much fertilizer in the heat can burn your grass. The best time to fertilize is early summer before temps get crazy!

If your lawn’s looking tired, sometimes it’s better to wait until fall for a bigger feeding. Or consider lighter summer feedings with slow-release products to keep things green without stressing your turf.

🌿 Pro tip: Mow high, water wisely, and don’t overdo the fertilizer. Your grass will thank you!

The Secret Nighttime Garden Raiders 👀

Ever check your garden in the morning and find seedlings mysteriously chopped off at the soil line? You might have cutworms!

You can find Cutworms…

🩵Hiding in the soil or under mulch by day
💚Active at night, feeding in secret
🩵Found throughout East Texas gardens, especially in spring and summer

Cutworm damage looks like…

💚Cut seedlings clean off at the base
🩵Chewed through stems of young vegetable plants
💚Leaf plants wilting or lying flat on the ground

🩵 Their Favorite Plants:
• Tomatoes
• Peppers
• Lettuce
• Cabbage
• Beans
• Many annual flowers

How do we fight back? 👊🏼

💚Clear plant debris and w**ds where they hide
🩵Place collars (like cardboard tubes) around stems
💚Keep garden beds w**ded and mulched lightly
🩵Encourage birds and beneficial insects
💚Hand-pick at night with a flashlight
🩵Sprinkle diatomaceous earth around seedlings

✨ Keep an eye out for these sneaky garden pests to protect your summer harvest 🐛

🐝 Don’t Step on a Bee Day 🐝

Yes, it’s a real thing, and here’s why it matters.

Bees are more than buzzing visitors in your garden they’re essential pollinators that keep flowers blooming and food growing!

A single bee can visit 5,000+ flowers a day, making them nature’s busiest little workers.
But the summer heat and lawn activities can put them at risk.

Mowing, stepping on clover, and even mulching can accidentally disturb or harm our pollinator friends.

So today, step gently and say thanks to the bees!

East Texas summers can be brutal on your turf, but how do you know if your lawn is simply stressed from heat, or battling a fungal problem?

🔥 Signs of Heat Stress:

🩵Grass turns bluish-gray or dull green
💚Footprints remain visible after walking on the lawn
🩵Soil feels dry and hard
💚Uniform discoloration over large areas
🩵Grass blades wilt or curl

🍄Signs of Fungal Issues:

🩵Irregular brown or yellow patches (often in circles or streaks)
💚Grass blades have spots, rings, or slimy coatings
🩵Mushrooms popping up in the lawn
💚Affected areas keep expanding
🩵Turf pulls up easily like sod in severe cases

July might feel blazing hot, but there’s still time to keep your garden growing strong. In East Texas, these heat-loving veggies, herbs, and flowers can go in the ground right now:

💚 Okra — thrives in heat and produces until fall.
🩵 Southern Peas (black-eyed peas, purple hulls) — love hot temps and enrich your soil.
💚 Basil — grows fast and keeps pests away from tomatoes.
🩵 Zinnias & Marigolds — brighten your beds and attract pollinators.
💚 Sweet Potatoes — perfect for summer planting and delicious come fall.

Keep beds well-watered, mulch thickly to protect roots, and choose early-maturing varieties when possible. Your garden can still shine, even in the summer heat!

Did You Know? Tiny Aphids Can Cause Big Problems! 🪲

💚 Aphids suck sap from plants, stealing nutrients.
🩵 They cause curling leaves, yellowing, and stunted growth.
💚 They leave behind sticky honeydew that attracts ants and sooty mold.
🩵 They can spread plant viruses, harming veggies and flowers.

How to fight back:
💚 Blast them off with water.
🩵 Invite ladybugs and lacewings.
💚 Prune infested areas.
🩵 Try insecticidal soap if needed.

✨ Stay vigilant and keep your garden thriving!

🌿✨ Did You Know? Mowing Higher Helps Your Lawn Beat the Heat! ☀️

Shorter grass doesn’t always keeps your yard looking neat. In this East Texas heat, it can actually harm your lawn.

Here’s why we raise the mower blades when temps soar:
💚 Taller grass shades the soil, keeping roots cooler
🩵 Helps soil hold moisture longer
💚 Protects grass from sun scorch
🩵 Crowds out w**ds better than scalped lawns

You should never cut off more than 1/3 of the grass height at once. Cutting too short stresses your turf and leaves it vulnerable to heat and drought.

At Holy Grounds Lawn Care & Restoration, we’re dedicated to helping East Texas lawns stay healthy and vibrant all season long.
