🔧 Troubleshooting Barn Camera Connectivity After Power Outage 🔧
We recently worked on a barn security system affected by a power outage and encountered some connectivity issues. Here’s a breakdown of the situation and how we resolved it:
📡 What We Found:
• All cameras were accessible from the POE switch in the barn, and we were able to view video and make changes without any problems.
• The radios were paired and functioning when checked individually, but there was no connection between the house and barn, despite the connection appearing live.
• We attempted to reset the cameras to DHCP to get new IP addresses, but they didn’t acquire them, suggesting a potential network issue.
💡 Key Discovery: The access point radio in the barn was showing the LAN port as "unplugged" even though it was properly connected. This led to the conclusion that while the radio was receiving power and establishing a link, it wasn’t passing data. We suspected the LAN port on the radio may be faulty.
🔧 The Culprit: Upon further inspection, one of the CAT6 cable terminations had gone bad during the power outage, likely from a brief power flicker. After re-terminating the cable, the router lights came back on, and everything worked as expected.
⚡ Next Steps: To ensure we don’t run into similar issues in the future, we’re installing a surge protector to safeguard the system from power fluctuations.
We’re back up and running, and everything is functioning properly now! If you’re having similar issues with your system, it’s always worth checking your cable terminations, radios, and considering surge protection to protect your equipment.
