I’m happy with the way this coffee table turned out, and now it’s up for sale! Turns out I enjoy repurposing parts of old furniture into new projects about as much as starting from scratch:)

I finished prepping the tabletop and applying my own mix of Danish oil—I’m loving the varieties of grain in this oak! I’ll be using black metal legs on this build, and it should be up for sale soon!

Someone in town was discarding a solid oak cart several months ago, so I picked it up knowing I could make something out of it eventually. I’m just now cutting through the old, dinged finish (still visible on the edges here) to prepare the tabletop for a new Danish oil finish. Next, I’ll attach some metal legs and have a coffee table up for sale.

Let me know if you’re interested!

This past week I enjoyed building the front of the outhouse from Shrek to support the CHS senior class. They did an amazing job transforming our lobby into a Shrek-themed space for the start of spirit week, and my project was just a small contribution among many others.

Back in the summer, my Grandfather (Mark Chase) sent me this hand bell that was used by his Father (Floyd Chase), my Great-Grandfather, when he was a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in Ohio. My Grandfather wrote me a brief letter to go along with the bell, and my Dad was able to find a photograph of Great-Grandfather Floyd for me.

I’m deeply honored to have this heirloom from another teacher in my ancestry, and I wanted to make a fitting display for it. Using some leftover oak from previous projects, I made this mitered shadow box with a removable glass panel. I then finished the box with a few coats of my own blend of Danish oil. From now on, the shadow box will be displayed prominently on my bookshelf at home.

So I got a little carried away this Christmas break and restored all three of my old Stanley Bailey hand planes: my No. 5, 6, and 7. It was a very therapeutic process, and they feel and perform like new again. I swapped a few minor components in some cases—I’m not a historian or collector, but a user. This work goes along well with my personality—I will almost always prefer the tried and true old method or tool.

The acid bath and handle refinishing is underway. Hoping to scour all the fading paint from the metal in order to repaint that as well.

I keep working on different woodworking projects for people, but I haven't been posting as much--I will be getting back to some more of that soon.

Yesterday I started a project that I have been interested in for quite some time: restoring my Grandfather's Stanley No. 6. He gave me this plane this past year, and I'm honored to have an heirloom tool like this that he would have used in the 50s in Ohio, and then later in Georgia and Virginia. My Dad even remembers seeing him using it to trim door frames and do other sorts of work around the house. The plane fits the era as well--it is a Stanley Type 19 produced from 1948-1961.

This plane has already been a great user, but I want to restore it to a close-to-new condition. So yesterday I took it apart, degreased it, brushed it, and sanded the handle and tote down to the bare rosewood again. Now I'll be putting all the metal parts in a solution to cut down the remaining rust and finding a finish apply for the wood. We'll see how things develop!

Sometimes one project calls for another, and it’s nice when woodworking can fix a woodworking problem. I was tired of my plastic table saw throat plate bending and misaligning, so I made my own out of oak.

The design and dimensions you can see here were straightforward, but the bottom required some ugly recesses to fit the finicky design. Planed, sanded to 600, and finished with paste wax. Ready for years of use!

Unfortunately, I am now not able to attend the Trumbull Farm Festival on Saturday, but I do have several charcuterie boards for sale. Message me if you’re interested!
