I recently pulled these two loaves of sourdough bread out of the oven and thought they would work well as subjects for culinary photography. When photographing food, I like to think about more than just the food itself. The textures, colors, lighting, and even the surrounding kitchen elements all help tell the story. Here, I wanted to capture the golden crust, the scoring patterns, and the rustic look of the finished loaves. Of course, the best part of this photo shoot is getting to eat the subject afterward!

This winding stretch of Highway 42 near Northport is famous for its series of 15 curves packed into roughly a mile of roadway. Built in the 1930s, the road has an interesting bit of history. One theory is that its unusual design was influenced by telephone poles that once ran down the middle of the road. Another story connects the curves to the philosophy of landscape architect Jens Jensen, who believed roads should encourage people to slow down and appreciate the surrounding landscape. While his direct involvement in designing this road hasn't been confirmed, the idea certainly fits the setting!

From a photography standpoint, this location is a great example of how lens choice can change the way we see a scene. Rather than photographing the road with a wide-angle lens, I used a longer focal length to compress the perspective. This makes the bends appear closer together and more pronounced, creating the illusion of an even more winding road. Combined with the vibrant fall colors, the curves become natural leading lines that draw your eye deeper into the photograph.

One of the things I love about photography is how changing your perspective can turn an ordinary scene into something much more interesting.

For this photo, instead of simply capturing the beautiful fall colors along a tree-lined road, I used the side mirror of my car to frame the scene. The mirror creates a natural frame, draws your eye down the road, and captures the brilliant autumn colors reflected in the glass. The red edge of the car adds another pop of color and helps separate the reflection from the surroundings.

When I want something different, I try to look around, change my angle, and get creative with my perspective.

One of the things I love about photography is finding little scenes that might otherwise go unnoticed and turning them into something special. While walking through downtown Manitowoc, I spotted these carved pumpkins near the corner fountain area and knew I had a photo idea!

What really caught my eye was the archway covered in beautiful fall colors. I loved how the curves of the metal structure created leading lines that drew the eye toward the building in the background. Add in the pumpkin in the foreground and the contrast between the shady walkway and the sunlit building, and I had a composition I really liked.

Sometimes, you don't need to go far or find an amazing landscape to capture a great photo. You just need to slow down, look around, and see the possibilities in what's right in front of you.

There are certain places I return to year after year with my camera, and this is one of them. Watching the trees transform into a beautiful mix of gold, orange, and red never gets old.

I love how the canopy of autumn leaves creates a natural tunnel over the road, with the leading lines drawing your eyes toward the light in the distance. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best fall photos come from simply returning to a favorite place and seeing how the seasons change it.
