It’s time for a mid-June photo update from one of my favorite gardens in North Conway, NH—and this garden certainly knows how to GROW!
The combination of abundant sunshine, deep rich soil and daily summer watering creates some incredibly vigorous plants. By this point in the season, many of the perennials are already becoming giants and the garden is overflowing with texture and color.
Since my own gardens at home range from part sun to full shade, I have to admit that seeing plants grow this large and happy in full sun makes me smile intensely!
The garden stretches along the property and above the beautiful stone retaining wall, with layers of flowering perennials, ornamental grasses, roses and colorful foliage creating something interesting everywhere you look.
And we aren't the only ones enjoying it. The neighbors love the display, and the butterflies and numerous other pollinators have made themselves right at home.

Sometimes a small garden can make a BIG statement!
This unique Hudson, NH garden is now in year two, and it has quickly become one of my top five all-time favorite gardens.
When we first started, the client told me she wanted an intense garden in a tiny space. I said, “Yes, I can do that!”
Greenleaf’s Garden Design turned the area into what I like to call a research garden—a place where I can introduce nifty, new and exciting perennials that I haven’t fully tested yet. The goal was to pack this smaller space with unusual plants, contrasting foliage and lots of changing color.
And it worked out perfectly!
Every time I stopped by, the client greeted me with a big smile and an update on how all the plants were doing. This spring, I brought in a few more interesting perennials to replace some varieties that proved to be less winter hardy.
Now look at it!

This Dunstable, MA property has five different garden areas—three across the front of the house and two along the side—each with its own growing conditions and personality.
When I stopped back a few days ago, I noticed the sunny garden was struggling a bit. The plants were telling the story pretty clearly: they needed more water! With the summer sun and heat, sometimes even an established garden needs a little extra attention.
Then I headed over to the shade garden.
For this area, I went to Mahoney’s Nursery with one goal: find plants with the most dramatic foliage colors I could find!
WOWZA!!!
The combination came together beautifully. Bright yellow, purple, silvery green, lime green and deep green foliage all play off one another beneath the trees. In a shade garden where flowers aren't always the main attraction, foliage color can create just as much excitement.
Greenleaf’s Garden Design will continue maintaining these gardens and watching how the different plants develop.

It’s always rewarding to return to a garden and see how everything is filling in! This early July update from Hudson, NH shows how beautifully this backyard planting is becoming established.
Greenleaf’s Garden Design planted five Japanese hollies, each about 3½ feet tall, to provide structure and year-round greenery around the new patio. We added five red roses for bold summer color and approximately 20 Pachysandra plugs along the front of the bed to create a low-growing groundcover that connects the garden naturally to the patio.
The contrast between the deep green hollies and those bright red roses is really beginning to make an impact. As the Pachysandra continues to spread, it will soften the edge and help tie the entire planting together.
And our client? She was ecstatic with the new colors—and especially happy to see her beloved Pachysandra!
It’s great to see the garden doing exactly what we designed it to do.

This Hudson garden is a great example of designing with both sun and shade in mind. With approximately 2,000 square feet of garden beds, there’s plenty of room for different plants, textures, heights and colors to shine throughout the property.
Greenleaf’s Garden Design maintains the sunny areas with colorful perennials that really come alive during the summer. These early July photos caught the garden at a beautiful moment, with bright pinks, oranges and purples surrounded by layers of lush green foliage.
Move into the shadier areas and the garden takes on a completely different personality. Large, healthy hostas provide bold foliage and texture beneath the mature shrubs and trees, creating a cooler woodland feel.
With a garden this large, the goal isn’t for everything to bloom at once. It’s about creating changing waves of color and interest as the season progresses. Early July certainly put on a show!

This Bedford garden has officially become our “Research Garden.”
This is year three working with this client, and she has one particularly challenging area in her backyard — an 80-foot-long by 10-foot-wide garden bed tucked alongside the woods and a rocky slope.
For two years, we tried different perennial combinations. Unfortunately, many simply didn’t thrive in this difficult location. Because our perennials have a one-year guarantee, we stood behind our work and replaced about 60% of the garden — roughly 50 plants — at no charge, two years in a row.
This spring, I decided it was time for a completely different approach.
Instead of fighting the conditions, I selected what I jokingly call aggressive “weed” perennials — tough, spreading plants that actually WANT to take over. The goal is to create a dense, natural-looking garden that can compete with weeds and gradually fill this challenging 800-square-foot area.

This is year three caring for our Bedford, NH client’s gardens, and by early July, everything is really beginning to put on a show!
Each year, our client loves having her favorite red and white New Guinea SunPatiens planted along the walkways. They provide a beautiful, crisp border of summer color and look especially nice against the established ornamental grasses and perennials.
Now that we’re into July, the garden is changing again. The yellow Coreopsis is in full bloom, creating a bright sweep of color that complements the red and white annuals. Other established perennials are filling out as well, giving the gardens layers of different heights, textures and colors.
One of the benefits of maintaining the same garden year after year is watching it mature. We can build on what works, add seasonal color and keep the established plantings looking their best.
Three years in, and this Bedford garden just keeps getting better!

Sometimes a garden project comes with a deadline—and this Westford, MA client needed her new garden completed by Monday.
We were already backed up with projects, so I told her, “We’ll come Saturday!”
This garden needed more than simply adding a few plants. I personally dug out about 3 yards of the existing soil, while my team member loaded it onto the truck. I then hauled it to the recycling yard and unloaded it.
Next came 3 yards of fresh compost, which we brought back and worked into the new garden bed approximately 10 inches deep. Starting with good soil makes a tremendous difference when you're investing in a new perennial garden.
Then came the icing on the cake: 40 beautiful perennials, carefully selected to bring different colors, textures and forms to the front of the home. We finished everything with Hemlock mulch for that rich, clean look.
I also tried something a little different on this project.

This Westford, MA garden has been an evolving project—and a good example of how a garden can get better each season.
Last September, my client wanted bright, impactful color planted in distinct groupings. His office overlooks the garden from about 20 feet away and two stories up, so the flowers needed enough color and mass to really stand out from his window.
I designed several groupings using summer-blooming perennials that would give him the effect he was looking for. There was just one catch: the bunnies would probably love them as much as we did!
I suggested installing a discreet 2-foot black bunny fence around the garden. His answer was simple: “Go for it.” The fencing blended nicely into the landscape and did its job.
Extending the Blooming Season
When we returned this spring, about 16 plants hadn't made it through, and the client had a new request.
