I doubt I’ll ever tire of viewing gorgeous homes. By happy coincidence, Chelan, WA’s “1st Annual Home Tour” coincided with a getaway this weekend and it was inspiring to experience such spectacular home design. I’ll be plagiarizing the concept of the glass enclosure for the water closet (toilet area) as a space saver. Baths were luxurious statements and 10’ and 11’H window walls left me drooling over the spectacular views. And though not interior design, those long pavers for entry access are awesome. I confess, I do love pretty.

I’m really enjoying working with the warmer color tones clients are asking for as grey takes a backseat to new color trends. This palette blends a yummy mix of browns ranging from just a whisper to a rich bold statement. But an analogous color scheme of deep blue-green and neutralized green-blue adds interest for what will all come together as Warm and Welcoming.

I've had two young potential clients inquire about my services over the last two weeks. Nothing unusual about that . . . except . . . Both have designs they completed using AI. They just want me to do a consultation and tell them what finish materials will fulfill those designs in their budget. Hmmmm.

I've gotten on the bandwagon and have been delving into AI tools these last few months. I'm amazed by it. There's much to learn, but I am digging deeper and deeper into that study.

There is a lot of talk and fear about AI putting people like me out of business. So after hanging up from the inquiry call today, I asked ChatGPT the important question: Why would anyone need an interior designer instead of you? The agent's answer was what I should have already known . . .

The agent said that it cannot step into the space and evaluate the light and how it will affect the character of the space or its affect on colors selected. AI doesn't see the rest of the house. It doesn't see the scale and proportion of the rooms. It doesn't have finish samples to share and review with you in the actual space, and then leave with you so you can view them as the weather and light of the day changes over time--to experience how you feel with those colors and textures. AI makes things Pinterest-pretty; I make them personally right. And here's what it said that I loved most: "If someone just wants quick inspiration, I’m useful. If they want a space that works, lasts, and feels right in real life, they need you."

I agree.

P.S. This photo is a mock-up of a preliminary bedroom concept for a client to help her visualize the bedroom furniture and paneled bed wall she was considering. It was my first try at AI-generated renderings, but what a tool this will be.

Went to two of my favorite candy stores furniture shopping for a client today: Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn. Leaving Bellevue my GPS routed me to the Vashon Island/Southport ferry which I’ve never taken before, so a fun new experience! And the mountain was out! What a great day.

Thank you Van D**e Hardwood Floors for transforming my home!

It's been 11 years I've lived with the deep gouges and pockmarks inherited in my pine floors from the prior owner. But they are a thing of the past! And I am so happy with the color! The sun had ambered the finish to a dark amber over the years, but Randy and his crew rediscovered the natural wood, and with a clear sealer the whole house presents a fresh character I can't wait to continue to modernize this year. I wish I could better capture its light fresh feel with the photos.

I love how one change like this can transform a home and how we respond to it. It may be refinishing floors, changing wall color, replacing living room or primary bedroom furniture, a different rug and decor. Whatever the choice, it is a gift for the spirit. I am eager to help you experience a similar joy whenever you're ready to make a change!

I was walking the beach for my morning exercise today and glanced up to see an enormous turtle gliding across the horizon. LOL! You probably recognize it as Orcas Island and Turtleback Mountain, perfectly isolated within the settling of the sea haze and cloud cover. But what amazed me as well was how a gorgeous blue tone permeated the photos. No filters were applied.

I share these photos as illustration of how the orientation of our home’s windows affect the colors we select. Southern light is known to warm its environment with a luscious golden glow. But even though I hear that artists love northerly light for its consistency, its cool tones can leave a room feeling drab and gray. That’s why it’s so important to sample a paint color in the environment it will be in and not just base your choice on how beautiful the color looks in your friend’s house! Printed paint samples are easily obtained these days from most paint manufacturers online. Live with them for a few days and observe how they change with the light of day and weather. Then you can complete your painting project with confidence.

The dining furniture was delivered and the client has Staged the shelves with some of his cherished items. He’ll finish where I left off adding decor and other personal touches to the spaces, but I’m so pleased for him to have this improved home environment just in time for his Thanksgiving entertaining.

Some designs are a labor of love. I conceptualized this shelving feature as part of a new living and dining room concept to fill an awkward void between a structural post and partition wall dividing the two spaces. I not only wanted to add a wow factor to the room; I wanted to create a light-catching place where the client could display his sea glass collection that has sentiment and precious memories of someone special in his life. It was a terribly stressful few months troubleshooting stumbling block after stumbling block with the narrow opening and installation restrictions of the cable and glass combo that I didn't anticipate, but now here we are with a gorgeous feature!! I am so pleased with the outcome. And so is the client. I can't thank Joe with Pierson Contracting enough for his amazing woodworking skill. I told him I wanted the detail of the construction to look like "fine furniture" and that's exactly what I got. And August Glass had the patience of Job with the ongoing delays and changes. But the biggest thanks goes to the client whose patient demeanor gave us room to muddle through the muck and find our way from a conceived idea to installation. Celebrations for all!!!
