Happy Turf Tuesday

This week’s feature is a beautiful property right along the James River here in Richmond.

We’ve finally had some better weather recently along with a little much-needed rainfall over the past few days, but make no mistake — we are still dealing with drought conditions across the area. Even so, we’ve been really encouraged by how well many of our lawns are holding up under the stress.

One of the biggest reasons for that is our focus on building healthier plants from the soil up.

At Turf Professors, we utilize a wide range of organic inputs and bio-stimulant products designed to strengthen the plant, encourage deeper root growth, and improve overall soil health. Instead of simply pushing excessive top growth with heavy nitrogen applications, our approach focuses on developing stronger, more resilient turf that can better handle heat and drought stress.

The result is lawns that maintain great color and overall health without creating the excessive flushes of growth that can actually increase stress during difficult weather conditions.

A healthy lawn starts below the surface. Strong roots, healthy soil biology, and balanced nutrition all play a major role in helping turf survive and perform through periods of environmental stress like the drought conditions we’re currently experiencing.

As temperatures continue to rise, that deeper level of lawn health becomes more and more important.

Happy Turf Tuesday!

This week’s feature is one of our new spray trucks out working in the Short Pump area on an absolutely beautiful day here in Richmond.

While most lawns are still looking great, some are definitely starting to struggle from the lack of rainfall we’ve seen this spring. It’s been a long time since we’ve experienced such dry conditions this early in the growing season, and lawns that aren’t receiving enough water are beginning to show signs of stress.

Right now, deep and infrequent watering is extremely important. We recommend watering early in the morning about 3 days per week to help push moisture deeper into the soil and encourage stronger root growth. Frequent shallow watering creates weaker turf with shallow roots that struggle much more during hot, dry weather.

Proper mowing practices matter just as much this time of year. Sharp mower blades help create a clean cut and reduce unnecessary stress on the turf. It’s also important to avoid mowing lawns that are already heat or drought stressed, especially during the hottest parts of the day. Keeping mowing heights taller will help shade the soil, retain moisture, and improve overall turf health during these dry conditions.

We’re hoping to see some meaningful rainfall soon, but in the meantime, good watering and mowing habits can make a huge difference in how your lawn handles the stress of this unusually dry spring.

Happy Turf Tuesday

Hard to beat a day like today. Sunshine, great temperatures, and our crews were out making the most of it — handling regular applications along with potassium and lime treatments to keep lawns moving in the right direction.

This week’s feature is a beautiful property just off Cary Street in the West End of Richmond. Lawns across the area are really starting to respond, and it shows.

We’ve also started getting the annual round of calls about Poa annua — and if you’ve dealt with it before, you know it can be a real pain.

Poa annua is a grassy w**d that pops up this time of year and stands out quickly. The important thing to know is that it’s not controlled through standard lawn care applications alone. It requires a very specific approach.

Our Poa annua suppression program happens in the fall and includes two targeted applications with specialized products, timed precisely to prevent it from establishing in the first place.

Without that timing and product selection, it’s very difficult to control once you’re seeing it in the spring.

The good news is that Poa annua is a cool-season annual, so it will naturally decline and die off as we get into the heat of summer.

For now, we stay focused on strengthening the turf and setting the lawn up to continue improving as the season progresses.

Happy Turf Tuesday!

This week we’re featuring a Goochland lawn showing off one of our new Turf Professors signs — and more importantly, a lawn that’s coming out of winter looking strong.

After a harsh winter with extended cold and snow cover, we’re really starting to see lawns respond as conditions improve. Color is coming back, density is improving, and the foundation is being set for a great spring.

We also want to highlight something that matters just as much as results — how those results are achieved.

Today brought sustained winds around 12–13 mph with gusts up to 30 mph, which meant we held off on lawn applications and spent time in the shop getting equipment dialed in for the rest of the week.

Here’s why that matters:

• Lawn applications should not be made when sustained winds exceed 15 mph

• Wind can carry products off target — potentially impacting trees, shrubs, and surrounding landscape beds

• It also increases the risk of material ending up on your home, hardscapes, and other unintended areas

• And just as important, it creates a less safe environment for technicians applying those products

While we did see other companies out applying today, that’s not how we operate.

Our focus is simple — deliver great results while protecting your property, the environment, and our team every step of the way.

Happy Turf Tuesday 🌱

This week we’re featuring a Southside lawn that’s already looking sharp after its first mow of the year.

The best part? The transformation.

Just a year ago, this yard was full of w**ds and invasive grasses after going untreated for over a decade. Now it’s clean, healthy, and set up for a strong season ahead.

The weather at the start of this season definitely brought some challenges. Between extended snow cover and temperatures we haven’t seen in Richmond in a long time, it slowed the usual early momentum. But we’re hitting our stride and excited to keep building results like this across the area.

As mowing season ramps up, a few quick reminders go a long way...

✂️ Sharp mower blades matter — clean cuts help turf recover faster and stay healthier

🌱 Leave the clippings — they break down quickly and return valuable nutrients back into the

🚧 Minimize repeated traffic in the same areas, especially with all the mulch installs happening right now

📏 Start the season mowing at ~3.5" to promote deeper roots and a thicker stand of turf

Stay tuned… it only gets better from here.

Turf Tuesday: The people behind Turf Professors.

At Turf Professors, our work is driven by the people who show up every day and take pride in what they do. The photos we are sharing today highlight the dedicated turf technicians who make our programs work, including John, Amavie, and Robert. Their attention to detail and commitment to quality play a major role in the results our customers see season after season.

Our team is deeply connected to the communities we serve. From accurate measurements to carefully calibrated applications, it takes skilled technicians to deliver consistent, thoughtful lawn care. We are proud of this crew and grateful for the professionalism they bring to every property.

As we look ahead to the upcoming lawn care season, we are excited to get back to work and continue building healthy lawns across our service area. Preparation now sets the tone for success later.

One quick winter reminder as we head into the weekend. A major snow event is in the forecast. When lawns are covered in snow or frost, it is important to stay off the grass. Foot traffic on frozen turf can damage the blades, compact the soil, and leave marks that can linger well into spring. Limiting traffic during winter weather helps preserve the progress made throughout the year.

Thank you for supporting Turf Professors and the team members who make it all happen.

Turf Tuesday: Thoughtful lawn care starts with precision.

At Turf Professors, every lawn care program we offer is built around long term turf health and environmental stewardship. That starts with applying only what your lawn actually needs and nothing more. To do that correctly, we must know exactly how much turf we are treating on each property.

That is why we measure lawns the right way. We do not rely on satellite images or rough estimates. Our technicians are on site, physically measuring each lawn using GPS measuring wheels, like the one shown here. This allows us to accurately calibrate our equipment and apply products at precise rates. The result is consistent performance, responsible use of materials, and honest, square foot based pricing.

Precise measurements also play an important role in prioritizing the well being of your family, pets, and the environment. When application rates are correct, products work as intended and unnecessary inputs are avoided. It is a more responsible approach to lawn care and one we take seriously on every property we service.

If you would like to learn more about our lawn care programs or other services designed with environmental responsibility in mind, we would love to hear from you. Contact Turf Professors to see how thoughtful, precision based lawn care makes a difference.

Turf Tuesday: A holiday thank you from our team.

This holiday season, we want to thank our customers for their trust and continued support. Looking back on this past year, we are proud of the many beautiful lawns we had the opportunity to care for across our community. The photo we are sharing today captures a Goochland lawn at its summer best and reflects what is possible when each season is approached with care and intention.

At Turf Professors, we focus on making the most out of every season. From building strong root systems during the cooler months to keeping disease pressure in check during the summer, each step plays an important role. We are grateful for the relationships we have built and for the opportunity to serve homeowners who value thoughtful, high quality lawn care.

As we look ahead to 2026, we are excited for what is to come. While winter has settled in, warmer days and greener lawns are just around the corner, and we look forward to another year of serving our customers.

From all of us at Turf Professors, we wish you and your family a happy and healthy holiday season. Thank you for allowing us to serve you and for supporting a locally owned business.

Turf Tuesday: Even the wildlife appreciates a good lawn.

A customer sent us a great video last week of a buck strolling through their backyard. He walked right along the edge and managed to avoid the grass completely. He did it by pure coincidence, but it still gave us a smile and the perfect chance to share an important winter reminder.

When frost or snow shows up, your lawn becomes much more fragile. Frozen grass blades can bruise easily, and footprints may stick around long after the weather warms up. Staying off the lawn during these frozen mornings helps protect all the new growth from this fall and sets the stage for a stronger spring.

Leaf cleanup matters too. A blower is much gentler on new grass than a rake, and mowing should be avoided unless it is absolutely necessary. Heavy wheels and soft ground are not the best combination this time of year.

So even though our buck friend avoided the grass by accident, he still demonstrated the right winter lawn etiquette. When the turf is covered in frost or snow, staying off of it is the best thing you can do.

Turf Tuesday: Fall lawn reminders.

The photo we are sharing today is a great example of how strong a lawn can look after aeration and overseeding. This West End lawn has responded beautifully, but even the best lawns will begin to lose a little color as we move closer to winter. This is completely normal and part of the natural dormant cycle for tall fescue. The important work is happening underground as the roots continue to strengthen for next spring.

Proper leaf removal is especially important right now. When leaves sit on the lawn for too long, they block light and trap moisture. This can lead to thinning and bare spots that cannot be repaired until next fall’s aeration and overseeding season. Keeping up with leaf cleanup helps protect the new grass and maintains the progress your lawn has made this year.

If you have not scheduled your irrigation system to be winterized, the time is now. If you are having trouble getting on a provider’s schedule, please call our office. We work with a couple of excellent irrigation companies and are happy to share referrals.
