🌿✂️ Roses, Crape Myrtles, Ornamental Grasses? It's time for a date with your pruning shears! 🌸

Here in Oklahoma, late winter to early spring is the prime time to prune your shrub roses, crape myrtles, and ornamental grasses. Proper pruning keeps your plants healthy, encourages strong plant growth, and promotes vibrant blooms.

🌹 Roses – Trim back modern shrub roses and remove dead or weak stems for shape and increased airflow to prevent disease.
🌳 Crape Myrtles – Remove suckers and crossing branches, but avoid aggressive “crape murder”!
🎋 Ornamental Grasses – Cut back to 4-6 inches from the ground to make way for fresh new growth.

Check out these photos for step-by-step pruning tips! Have questions? Drop them in the comments or send us a message! 👇

Turn Your Yard Into an Oklahoma Oasis: Drought-Tolerant Plants That Thrive!

Let’s face it—keeping a lush, green lawn in Oklahoma feels like trying to herd cats during a windstorm. Between the blazing hot summers, unpredictable storms, and dry spells, needy landscaping can be a real headache at times. But here’s the good news: You don’t have to spend your weekends watering, mowing, and crossing your fingers for rain. With drought-tolerant and native plants, you can transform your yard into a stunning, low-maintenance haven that will make your neighbors green with envy (and save you a ton on your water bill. Praises!)

I have a lot of suburban homeowner clients that have spent years fighting the elements to keep their grass and plants alive, doing rain dances and cringing every time they see the water bill. But, like me, once they saw how native plants practically thrive on neglect, their landscaping game changed—and so can yours!

Why Native and Drought-Tolerant Plants are Your New Best Friends

Here in Oklahoma, we live in what’s called a transition zone. In plain English, this means our weather is a little bit of everything—scorching summers, icy winters, and just enough rain to keep us guessing. It’s the kind of place where plants that need constant watering and TLC don’t stand a chance.

Native plants, on the other hand, are like the hometown heroes of your yard. They’re perfectly suited to handle Oklahoma’s ups and downs, from 100-degree days to surprise frost. Even better, many native species are drought-tolerant, meaning they’ve got the built-in ability to survive with minimal water. Less water means less time spent caring for your yard and more time spent actually enjoying it!

Top Oklahoma Native Plants You’ll Love (And So Will Your Yard)

You don’t need a degree in horticulture to pick the right plants for your Oklahoma landscape. I already have one and I'm here to help! Here are a few of my personal favorites that not only look amazing but are tough as nails.

1. Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis)

I’ll start with the showstopper: Oklahoma’s state tree, the Eastern Redbud. Every spring, this beauty bursts with bright pink blooms, and guess what? It doesn’t need a ton of water to put on its vibrant display. Once established, it’s practically carefree. It grows up to 30 feet tall and fits perfectly in almost any yard size.

Imagine sipping your coffee while looking out at those stunning blooms—you’ll forget all about the fact that you haven’t watered it in weeks!

2. Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea)

Want a splash of color in your garden without the fuss? Purple coneflower is a no-brainer. This native perennial attracts butterflies (a plus if you like a little wildlife in your yard), and it can survive through Oklahoma’s driest months without breaking a sweat. Not to mention, it’s got medicinal properties—talk about multitasking!

3. Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium)

If you’re looking for something to add texture and movement to your garden, Little Bluestem is your answer. It’s a native grass that starts blue-green and turns a beautiful copper in the fall. I added a few of these to a bare patch in my yard, and now it’s one of my favorite areas. Plus, I haven’t watered them in over a year, and they’re still going strong!

4. American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana)

This is one of my most favorite plants. It's got a little something for everybody. It produces clusters of beautifully vibrant purple berries that birds can’t get enough of. It’s a shrub that grows well in part shade (there aren't too many shade-tolerant Oklahoma natives) and it's drought-tolerant once established. Plant it in a spot where you can enjoy watching the birds snack on its berries, and you’ll be hooked.

Designing a Drought-Friendly Oklahoma Garden

When you hear “drought-tolerant,” you might picture a dry, barren landscape, but nothing could be further from the truth. Native plants offer a huge variety of colors, textures, and blooms that can make your yard just as lush and inviting as any high-maintenance garden—minus the constant watering!

Here’s how you can design a stunning, water-wise yard:

1. Group Plants by Water Needs

Even drought-tolerant plants have different water requirements when they’re young, so be smart about where you plant them. Group plants with similar water needs together. This makes it easier to give them a little extra love during their first season, then leave them to thrive on their own.

2. Add Mulch, Mulch, and More Mulch

I can’t stress this enough: mulch is a game-changer. Not only does it help retain moisture in the soil, but it also keeps weeds at bay and adds a polished look to your yard. Aim for a two- to three-inch layer around your plants to keep things cool and reduce the need for extra watering. Seriously, don't skimp here!

3. Choose Eco-Friendly Lawn Alternatives

If you’re tired of mowing your lawn (who isn’t?) consider replacing it with eco-friendly alternatives like native grasses or even clover lawns. These are far more drought-resistant than traditional grass and require a fraction of the maintenance. Clover, for instance, stays green with little water, never needs fertilizer, and even attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies .

The Payoff: Less Work, More Enjoyment

Here’s the kicker: native and drought-tolerant plants don’t just look good—they make your life easier. After spending years trying to keep a thirsty lawn alive, switching to a low-maintenance, water-wise garden feels like a weight off your shoulders. Now, instead of spending every weekend dragging my hose around the yard, I get to sit back and enjoy it (with a venti iced sugar-free vanilla latte, of course).

And the savings? Oh yeah, there’s that too. Less watering equals a lower water bill, which means I can do what? Feed my soul by buying more plants!😅 Plus, because native plants don’t need fertilizers or pesticides, you’re also saving money and doing your part for the environment.

A Few Quick Tips to Keep in Mind:

• Patience Pays Off: Drought-tolerant plants need a little extra attention when first planted, but once they’re established, they can survive on rainfall alone.
• Water Deeply, But Infrequently: When you do water, make sure it’s a good soak so the roots grow deep. This makes plants even more drought-resistant in the long run.
• Native Doesn’t Mean No Maintenance: While native plants are tough, they still appreciate some occasional pruning and mulch to keep them looking their best.

Get Started: Your Yard, Your Oasis

So, are you ready to turn your Oklahoma yard into a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant oasis? The key is to start small. Pick a few native plants that catch your eye and begin incorporating them into your landscape. Before you know it, you’ll have a beautiful, water-wise yard that thrives even when the weather doesn’t cooperate.

Trust me, once you see how easy (and rewarding) it is to maintain, you’ll wonder why you didn’t make the switch sooner!

By the end of this transformation, you’ll have a yard that’s not just drought-tolerant, but Oklahoma-proof! Ready to start digging? Happy planting! 🌱Charissa Murphy
