As the year comes to a close, we first of all want to celebrate our positives.
Just at Alton Animal Control this year, we took in 254 dogs. Out of those 254, 69 returned to their owner, 174 were sent to rescue, and 11 were humanely euthanized. (5 due to illness, 6 due to aggression)
We took in 167 cats this year, 15 returned to owner, 151 went to rescue, and 1 was euthanized due to illness.
This puts us as a 98% save rate for the year, which again qualifies us as a no kill facility in the state of Illinois. 💯% save rate of adoptable animals‼️‼️‼️‼️ A lot of hard work goes into this from our officers and area rescues. We do all we can to save everyone, but we need your help going forward.
Now the hard part…animals are coming in at such a rapid rate that can barely keep our heads above water. While we have not had to euthanize for space in the 2 years we have been networking our own animals, we have been WAY too close for comfort so many times this year. We simply cannot keep up with the intake demand as it stands. This year, we took in 21 more cats and dogs than last year. We are going in the wrong direction here!
How can you help? SPAY AND NEUTER! Be a responsible pet owner, and keep track of your pets. Stop buying dogs from breeders, and stop allowing your unfixed animals to roam! A staggering 146 of the 254 dogs we took in this year were pit or pit mixes. That’s nearly 58% of our intakes!! This breed is massively overbred and the vast majority are unfixed. 92.3% of the cats and dogs that came through animal control this year were NOT fixed. People have to be responsible and fix their pets…there are several low cost options in the area! Reach out if you need help connecting to a place!
That being said, we also want to celebrate our partners in rescue!
Metro East Humane Society took in 110 dogs and 101 cats from us!!!!! That is 65% of our animals that went to rescue!!!
5A's Animal Shelter took in 3 cats and 24 dogs from us.
Partners 4 Pets took in 8 dogs and 10 cats.
Found A Hound Rescue took in 10 dogs.
Quincy Humane Society took 5 dogs.
Helping Strays of Monroe County took in 3 dogs and 2 cats.
Hope Rescues took in 4 dogs.
And any other rescues we are leaving out! Thank you! Without your partnerships, we wouldn’t be able to save as many animals as we do!
We also want to thank Madison County Animal Control for helping us network whenever they can! Especially with their assistance networking quite a few cats! We appreciate you
