🚫 3 Things I Would NEVER Do in My Own Home as a Plumber 🚫
1️⃣ Connect a water heater without checking water pressure first.
Most homeowners don't realize that high water pressure silently destroys plumbing systems. Anything consistently above 80 PSI puts extra stress on water heaters, supply lines, shut-off valves, faucets, and appliance connections. Many of the "random" leaks plumbers get called for are actually pressure-related failures that have been building for years.
2️⃣ Ignore the age of their water shut-off valves.
Here's an industry secret: many emergency plumbing disasters become catastrophes because the main shut-off valve fails when it's finally needed. Plumbers routinely find valves that haven't been exercised in 10+ years and either won't close or start leaking when touched. Knowing your shut-off works can be the difference between a minor repair and thousands in water damage.
3️⃣ Flush "flushable" wipes—even once.
Most plumbers know flushable wipes are one of the biggest marketing myths in the industry. Unlike toilet paper, they don't break apart quickly and can travel hundreds of feet before snagging roots, rough pipe surfaces, or grease buildup. Many major sewer backups start with just a handful of wipes over time—not massive misuse.
💡 The most expensive plumbing problems usually aren't caused by one big mistake. They're caused by small issues that go unnoticed for years.
