🏖️ *Sandy soil:* Because water and nutrients move through it quickly, mix in compost regularly and use mulch to slow moisture loss. Smaller, more frequent watering usually works better than heavy watering.

🧱 *Clay soil:* Avoid digging or walking on it when it is very wet—it compacts easily and can become almost brick-hard when dry. Adding compost over time improves structure much better than adding sand alone.

🌱 *Loam soil:* Even good loam still benefits from yearly compost and mulch. Test the pH occasionally, because “loam” describes texture—not whether the soil is automatically perfect for every plant.

🪨 *Chalky soil:* This soil is naturally alkaline, so acid-loving plants often struggle even with fertilizer. Blueberries, azaleas, and similar plants are usually easier to grow in containers filled with acidic potting mix.

🍂 *Peaty soil:* Peaty ground can hold lots of water but may also be quite acidic and low in certain available nutrients. Check both drainage and pH before planting; add lime only if a soil test shows it is needed.

💧 *Silty soil:* Silty soil can be very fertile, but its fine particles compact and wash away easily. Keep it covered with mulch or plants, add organic matter, and use permanent paths so you are not constantly stepping on growing areas.

One of the best problems a gardener can have is an overflowing basket of peppers. Whether you're growing bell peppers, jalapeños, banana peppers, poblanos, cayennes, or sweet peppers, there are plenty of ways to enjoy your harvest long after the growing season ends.

Freezing is one of the easiest methods. Simply wash, remove the stems and seeds if desired, dice or slice the peppers, and freeze them in airtight bags. They're perfect for soups, chili, stir-fries, casseroles, and omelets.

Drying peppers is another excellent option. Once fully dehydrated, you can store them whole, crush them into pepper flakes, or grind them into homemade pepper powder for seasoning throughout the year.

If you enjoy bold flavors, try fermenting peppers before blending them into homemade hot sauce. Fermentation develops a rich, tangy flavor that's difficult to achieve any other way.

Pickling is another favorite. Pickled peppers are delicious on sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, salads, nachos, and charcuterie boards.

Fresh peppers also make incredible salsa, pepper jelly, relishes, stuffed peppers, and freezer fajita mixes that are ready whenever you need a quick meal.

A successful pepper harvest doesn't have to end when summer is over. With a little planning, your garden can continue filling your kitchen for months to come.
