🔥 NC Drought Conditions Are Rising — Protect Your Lawn Before It’s Too Late

The latest drought monitor shows moderate to severe drought spreading across North Carolina, including Fayetteville, Hope Mills, and Vander.

If your lawn isn’t properly managed right now, you’ll start to see:

• Browning and thinning grass
• Increased weeds (crabgrass, spurge, nutsedge)
• Dry, compacted soil that won’t hold nutrients
• Expensive recovery costs later in the season

👉 This is where most homeowners fall behind — waiting too long to act.

At Blackman & Sons Lawns and Landscapes, we specialize in drought-resistant lawn care and irrigation solutions in Fayetteville, NC using NC State Extension-based turf management practices.

Our Services Include:

✔ Irrigation system installation & repair (Fayetteville, NC)
✔ Lawn watering optimization for Bermuda & Centipede grass
✔ Soil testing & pH correction (NCDA&CS backed)
✔ Fertilization programs designed for drought conditions
✔ W**d control & turf recovery plans

💡 A properly managed lawn uses less water, stays greener longer, and resists drought stress.

🌱 Exciting Opportunity for Our Local Agriculture & Horticulture Community! 🌱

At Blackman & Sons Lawns & Landscapes, we’re proud to work alongside organizations that strengthen agriculture, horticulture, and land stewardship here in Cumberland County and the greater Fayetteville area. One of the most valuable resources our community has is the incredible team at the NC Cooperative Extension and the Cumberland County Agriculture Center.

The Extension office has long been a pillar of education and support for farmers, landscapers, horticulturists, and homeowners alike. From Master Gardener programs to soil science education, turfgrass management, crop production, and sustainable agriculture, they help ensure our community has access to research-based knowledge straight from North Carolina State University.

Now they’re exploring the possibility of hosting a Certified Plant Professional (CPP) training program right here in Cumberland County.

This certification is a fantastic opportunity for:

• Landscapers & lawn care professionals
• Nursery and garden center employees
• Farmers and growers
• Master Gardeners
• Anyone passionate about horticulture, plant science, and agriculture

The Certified Plant Professional program helps deepen knowledge of plant identification, soils, plant health, pest management, and horticultural best practices. Programs like this strengthen the entire local green industry here in Fayetteville, Vander, Hope Mills, Spring Lake, and across Cumberland County.

We’ve always appreciated the partnership and support from the Extension service, and we’re proud to help promote their work whenever possible. Their mission to educate and empower our community directly supports businesses like ours and the many farmers and growers throughout the region. "A rising tide raises all ships in the harbor."

Proud to support the Extension Master Gardener Program here in Cumberland County, NC 🌱

As a certified Extension Master Gardener Volunteer, I can personally say this program is one of the most credible, science-based horticultural education pathways available to homeowners, volunteers, and green-industry professionals in North Carolina.

The Master Gardener Program is rooted in NC State Cooperative Extension research, hands-on training, and community service—covering turfgrass management, soil science, plant pathology, entomology, landscape design, and sustainable gardening practices specific to our Coastal Plain conditions.

🌱 Belated, but Still a Big Milestone 🌱

Back in December, I officially graduated from the NC State Extension Master Gardener Program. These are some belated photos from the graduation, but the education and impact continue every day.

I want to give a special shout-out to the incredible Master Gardener volunteers—past, present, and future—who give their time, knowledge, and energy to serve our communities. This program thrives because of people who believe in education, stewardship, and helping others succeed.

The Master Gardener program provides science-based horticultural training in areas like:

✔️ Turfgrass management
✔️ Soil science & fertility
✔️ Plant pathology & pest management
✔️ Native plants & pollinator support
✔️ Sustainable landscape practices

As the owner of Blackman & Sons Lawns and Landscapes, I’m looking forward to working alongside fellow volunteers to help raise the tide for horticultural knowledge across Cumberland County—empowering homeowners, property managers, and communities with better information and better outcomes.

Grateful for the instructors, the classmates, and the volunteers who make this program what it is. Better late than never 🌿

❄️ Snow days hit different around Blackman & Sons ❄️

While we were out clearing snow and taking care of our customers, Sarge was living his best life right at home—ears up, nose full of snow, and absolutely loving every minute of the winter weather. 🐾

German Shepherds are built for this, and Sarge reminds us daily that hard work and a little joy go hand in hand. Family-run, boots on the ground, and always backed by our four-legged supervisor.
Stay warm out there—and if you need snow cleared, you know who to call.

Proud to share this opportunity from the Soldiers to Agriculture (STAG) Program 🇺🇸🌱

As a veteran and former participant in the Soldiers to Agriculture Program, I can personally say this program changes lives. STAG gives veterans real, practical pathways into agriculture, land management, horticulture, and business ownership — especially for those looking to work the land and serve their communities in a new way.

If you’re a veteran — or know a veteran — who’s interested in agriculture, farming, landscaping, or environmental stewardship, this program is worth your time. Spots are limited, and registration is open now for the upcoming class.

Programs like this are a big reason why we do what we do at Blackman & Sons Lawns and Landscapes. As a veteran-owned, family-run lawn and landscaping company serving Fayetteville, Hope Mills, and Cumberland County, we believe in stewardship, education, and giving back to the land and the people who serve it.

If this speaks to you, please share it — you never know who it might help take their next step.
