It’s impossible for an ant to fall to its death/
Ants are uniquely equipped to survive falls that would be fatal to larger creatures, thanks to their extreme lightness and diminutive size.
Due to their small mass relative to their surface area, these insects reach terminal velocity—their maximum falling speed—almost instantly.
For example, if an ant drops from a height of 100 feet, it achieves this constant, safe pace in just over three seconds. Because their terminal velocity is so low, they hit the ground at a speed no faster than a gentle breeze, regardless of how far they have fallen.
This survival ability is driven by the balance between weight and air resistance, also known as drag. While an object’s weight remains constant, the drag force acting against it increases with speed until the two forces equalize, resulting in a final, steady velocity. Interestingly, observations suggest that the longer an ant falls, its survival rate may actually increase. By mastering the physics of drag, ants transform potentially lethal plunges into minor inconveniences, highlighting nature's incredible adaptation to the laws of physics at a microscopic scale.
