Rebuild or Repoint? 🧱 It’s always a case-by-case call. 👷
For these steps, a repair wasn’t going to cut it.
These steps were in need of a complete teardown and rebuild.

The Problems
⚠️ The mortar was cracking on the treads. The mortar had a significant split down the right side. The middle section of the steps was sinking. There was an ample concrete footing poured for these steps when they were built but the biggest issue with these steps was that the inside of the brick steps was not filled correctly when built.
🚩 Upon demolition of the existing steps, I found the inside of the steps insufficiently filled with only sand and a bit of hollow masonry. This left voids inside the brickwork. This incorrect building process was a big reason the steps were sinking and shifting.
💧 In addition, these cracks and eroded areas allow moisture to seep into the brick steps. This moisture can freeze and expand inside the brickwork, further disintegrating the steps. The weeds you can see growing through the brick steps in the before photos are proof that moisture and soil have definitely settled into gaps in the masonry.

The Fix ✨
✅ To remedy this issue, the existing steps had to be demo’d.
✅ The rebuilt set of steps is filled with solid masonry to ensure they last for years to come.

The brick steps were rebuilt with Pine Hall Brick Company, Inc. Old Dutch brick and Workrite 2081 Sawgrass Type N mortar from York Building Products. The day after they were built, the entire set of steps was washed down with Prosoco masonry cleaner. The materials were sourced from Riverside Brick in Chesapeake, a local brickyard/showroom. The entire project took about 4 working days.
