Moving is always a chore, but sizing down a large house to a more manageable sized house when you retire can very difficult to say the least!
We got to work with two of the nicest homeowners to turn this new-to-them home into a place that they can live and age in place. That meant adding large, wheelchair accessible doors, adding ramps into the house and repurposing the garage for a utility room.
We touched every single part of this house. We removed all the popcorn ceilings, all the ceiling fans, both bathrooms, the entire kitchen and all the flooring. We reframed the garage, removing the old gas water heater, and we moved the plumbing for the washer/dryer from the kitchen to the new utility space in the garage. This opened up the old washer/dryer space for the homeowner to add a pantry! We added a new, smaller, whole house instant water heater and a mini split to help heat and cool the extra space. We added a handicap door access, and while working with an ordinance to keep the existing garage door space, we added a new custom built garage French door that allowed us to remove the garage door apparatus and allow for a more home-like feel rather than a garage feel. While enclosing the garage door is what the homeowner originally wanted, we could not get the permissions to enclose it so this was a great way to keep the look on the outside while still serving its purpose inside!
In the kitchen, new cabinets were installed and painted, as well as a new tile backsplash. A large pass through was cut in the wall to give a more open feel to the small space, and French doors were added to give access to the patio. We added new recessed lighting to brighten things up and a new ceiling fans in the dining area. A pre-existing door that led to a breeze through between the kitchen and garage was enclosed to become a hallway and a doggie door was added for the homeowners pup.
In the living room, we gave it a paint refresh, added a light above the new pass through to the kitchen, added a new ceiling fan and new flooring throughout. We painted the hallway cabinets and new doors were added and painted to give it a more modern feel.
The guest bathroom was gutted and a new vanity, along with a walk in shower replaced the bath/tub combo.
The primary bedroom and bathroom underwent a huge change. While it had an existing closet, the homeowners wanted to add an additional closet for her. We took space from garage and added 2 doors that allow access from the bedroom and then through to the new enclosed garage. This gave quick access to the door with the ramp and the bedroom (just in case) it was ever needed.
Finally, the new primary bathroom was enlarged by taking space from the existing garage. A new double vanity was added, new plumbing throughout, a wheelchair accessible toilet and a large walk in shower with handicap rails.
This was definitely a work of heart as these sweet homeowners will hopefully be able to spend the rest of their years on this earth, with ease, in their brand new home!
