Please for the love of God can we all stop falling for the lies here!
Got a call from a lady who said she had a smell of sewer coming in to her home and some “drain cleaner “ told her she had a broken sewer line in her front yard. He supposedly camera’d the line from a floor drain and said it’s broken out in the front yard, couldn’t see it and didn’t show her anything.
First off: if the sewer line is backed up… you can’t see anything through the sewage. Full stop end of discussion. Secondly: sewer lines are typically dry unless being used. So dry lines allow sewer gases to come through and you have traps on sinks, toilets, tubs, showers to prevent smells from coming through. If the traps dry out?… then the smells can come through. Not from a broken sewer! Put water in unused fixtures and if you’re not going to use them for days or weeks, put a 1/4 cup of vegetable oil on top of the water. Even says it in the Code book! It’ll help keep the traps from drying out and sewer gases from coming back through.
It’s not a broken sewer drain!! Never will be that either! And by drain I mean out in the yard! That will cause a backup and is not the reason for the smell!
Remember: most of these drain guys are commissioned based sales. Meaning they get paid more for finding work! Don’t be gullible!
