👀 “Did an alien beetle just invade my house??”

That was the first reaction when this landed in a customer’s home! They took a picture and immediately sent it to us for further analysis. Do you want to know what this creature is? Is it harmful? Read-on!

👉Look at those feathery antennae! This is actually a Death Watch Beetle (aka Ptilinus ruficornis)

No UFO. No invasion. No need to call NASA. 😄

🪵 What is it REALLY?

The Death Watch Beetle is a harmless wood-boring beetle that usually shows up when there’s old or damp wood around.
Those dramatic antennae? That’s just the male trying to impress, not attack.

⚠️ Should you worry?

Not really. This isn’t a “panic and spray everything” situation.
It’s more of a “check your wood storage habits” situation.

✅ Simple Prevention Tips:

✔️ Do NOT store firewood indoors
✔️ Check wood for tiny exit holes (like pinholes)

🐀 A Rat Infestation Hiding in Plain Sight
Recently, we received a call from a homeowner who was dealing with something no one wants to discover in their home. At first glance, there was nothing unusual about the house. It was a normal, well-kept home. But once our Sentry team began the inspection, we found evidence that told a very different story. Droppings throughout the home and signs that the infestation had become increasingly serious.

The situation was especially concerning because the elderly woman living in the home had even experienced bite marks. Our first priority wasn't simply to put down a trap and leave. It was to identify exactly what we were dealing with—and where the problem was coming from.

Our experts carefully examined the evidence and determined that the droppings were consistent with rats, not mice. Then we followed the evidence. We identified a crawl-space access point that was giving the rats an opportunity to move freely throughout the home and establish a place to hide and breed. From there, we developed a methodical treatment plan, carefully placing traps and bait in strategic locations to address the infestation and eliminate the source.

The result was a very relieved homeowner and one more family with peace of mind! At Sentry, pest control isn't about simply catching a pest. It's about understanding what pest you're dealing with, how it got there, where it's hiding, and how to stop the problem from coming back.

Today’s tip is about rodents! MOUSE vs. RAT 🐀.. Can you tell the difference? They may both be rodents, but mice and rats are VERY different!

🔎 HERE’S HOW TO TELL:
🐭 MOUSE
• Smaller — about 5–8 inches including the tail
• Pointed snout + large, round ears
• Thin, lightly hairy tail
• Droppings look like tiny grains of rice
• Curious and quick to investigate new things
• Usually prefers seeds & grains
🐀 RAT
• Much larger — about 12–18 inches including the tail
• Blunt nose + smaller, folded ears
• Thick, scaly, hairless tail
• Droppings are larger, capsule-shaped
• More cautious around new objects
• Will eat just about anything!

Whether you have a mouse or a rat, seeing one can be a sign that others are nearby. Rodents can contaminate food, damage property, and squeeze through surprisingly small openings.

• Smooth, shiny black abdomen
• Often nests in wood

• Fuzzy body with black & yellow markings
• Usually nests underground
• Important pollinators for your garden

If you see a bee around your home, look before you leap! Not every buzzing bee is a pest—but if you notice round holes, wood shavings, or repeated bee activity around wooden structures, you may have carpenter bees.

YELLOW JACKETS ARE AT THEIR PEAK! ⚠️

West Milford homeowners: August and September are prime yellow jacket season. As colonies grow to thousands of workers, these stinging pests become especially active and much more interested in your food, sugary drinks, and outdoor garbage!

Here’s what you need to know:

🟡 They can sting multiple times. Unlike honeybees, yellow jackets have smooth stingers and can sting repeatedly.

🍔 Their diet changes. Earlier in the season, they feed heavily on insects. By late summer, they’re drawn to sweets, carbohydrates, drinks, and human food.

🏡 Nests can be hidden. Look for nests underground, inside wall voids, attics, or dense shrubs.

🚜 Watch out around the yard. Lawn mowing, foot traffic, or vibrations near a hidden nest can trigger an aggressive defensive response.

🛡️ Keep Your Family Safe

✔️ Keep outdoor garbage bins tightly covered.
✔️ Keep trash away from patios, doors, and seating areas.
✔️ Cover soda, juice, and other sweet drinks when outdoors.
