❄️ WINTER PSA: Roof Ice & Ice Dams
Large ice formations on a roof can look amazing — they’re part of a classic Buffalo winter.
But the underlying cause and effects often outweigh the beauty.
What homeowners should know:
- Ice dams form when melting snow refreezes at the roof edge and blocks proper drainage
- When water has nowhere to go, it can back up under shingles and enter the home
- Damage most often occurs during melting, not while everything is frozen
- Newer roofs are not immune to ice dam damage
Prevention (before heavy ice forms):
- Safely remove excess snow from the roof when possible
- Keep the roof edge clear to allow melting snow to drain
- Address insulation and ventilation issues over time
- Heating cables can help manage ice in some situations, but they don’t address the root cause and don’t always prevent ice dams
If an ice dam is already present:
- Snow removal alone will not resolve the issue
- Chipping, salting, or hammering can damage roofing materials
- Waiting for it to “melt on its own” can allow water intrusion
- Steam removal is the safest and most effective method and is the approach recognized by most insurance companies
