Power dethatching this neighbors yard today. Why do you hear me talk about dethatching so much you might ask? I mowed this first then dethatched it. See all of that grass standing way up and above all of the rest? Before dethatching it was laying down and smothering the rest of the grass around it.

One of the best examples of when dethatching is needed I’ve ever seen. The grass is laying down and completely matted. It all needs to be stood back up and mowed at a normal height to make room for good grass and to return to normal. Mind you, this will green up again but it will always lay flat. Aeration will cut through this, but still doesn’t stand the grass up.

Does it matter what seed you use to overseed in the fall?

In a word, yes!

Each bag contains a different cultivar of seed and you probably want to get the best value for your money! Choosing a "self-repairing" or rhizomatous seed (for those of us in Ohio) helps to fill in bare spots and gradually have more natural growth! Over time your lawn will require less and less seed each fall.

However, this is all based on budget and current state of the lawn. Rhizomatous seed is more expensive and isn't always an option. In that case, any seed is good seed! Just consider the other factors such as blade width, heat tolerance, color, and low when choosing your next bag.
