You may have heard of Class 3 shingles, but what does "Class 3" actually mean?

A shingle's impact rating is determined in a controlled test where a steel ball is dropped from various heights, and the resulting damage is closely documented. There are only 4 ratings, organized into classes 1-4. The higher class the shingle, the more durable it is.

So why should homeowner choose a shingle with a higher class rating? Aside from better protecting your home from hail, higher class shingles tend to last longer. Additionally, some insurance companies will offer discounts on premiums for homes equipped with Class 4 shingles.
