In all my years,I have never before had a gas valve BREAK OFF THE WATER HEATER while I was trying to remove the gas supply ni**le!

This is 3" cast iron pipe - or at least it was cast iron pipe! This was in the bathroom wall of the customer's house, and was only discovered because of the bathroom renovation. It served as the main vent for the house, attached directly above the closet tee.

Someone before me decided to cut into this pipe, then reconnect it with a Shark bite fitting. Obviously, it would leak from time to time, so they covered the ends with what appears to be JBWeld. I just cut the whole chunk out and replaced it with copper pipe, then spliced it together with ProPress fittings. Not a fan of Shark bite materials, for this very reason

Installing a cast iron floor collar onto an existing cast iron pipe in a basement floor. There was no existing collar, so I had to chisel out the cement around the pipe before I was able to put the collar in place.

Old school plumbing today. Lead and oakum, installing a floor collar on a basement floor. Still seems like the best repair - just put it back the same way it was originally installed! The electric lead pot and chisels belonged to my Dad - they are older than me! You can see me pounding the oakum into the space between the existing pipe and the new collar. Oakum is a jute packing that will expand when it gets wet, which helps the joint seal. Then, I pour the molten lead on top of the oakum, and when it cools enough to solidify, I pound the lead as far as possible into the channel. It's hard to see, but you can see the molten lead as it fills the channel and reaches the top.
I tried to point my phone at the collar, I thought I had it aligned to record my work, but it's not a real good angle. Kinda hard to record with my phone when I need my two hands to work. I also posted a picture of the finished product.

Apparently, this pipe that served the outside faucet had split open numerous times, and the homeowner tried to repair it, so they cut the pipe to get the water out of it, then soldered it by adding yet another coupling. I removed this piece, then made sure that the pipe was pitched towards the outside faucet, not allowing the water to remain in the pipe that is anywhere close to the outside wall

Lazy plumbing! What's worse is that the Dahl company actually makes a valve that attaches to the original valve! Just drain the water out of the system and replace the original valve - that's how I do things
