Spring Road Restrictions — What They Mean for Construction

Spring in Northwest Montana brings thawing ground and softer roadbeds — and county restrictions on heavy hauling to protect our roads during this vulnerable period.

Here’s what that means for your project and how we (GRE) operates through it:
🔹 Why restrictions exist:
When frost melts, the ground under paved and gravel roads gets soft and can’t support heavy loads. To prevent damage (ruts, heaves, costlier repairs), Flathead County enforces seasonal limits on truck weights and access.
🔹 How it affects construction:
• Hauling gravel, dirt, and equipment may be limited or rerouted.
• Timing of deliveries and heavy lifts can shift based on road conditions.
• Counties may issue permits with specific weight limits and schedules.
🔹 How GRE handles it:
• We monitor county restrictions, when they go in place and adjust logistics accordingly.

Broken machinery, blown hoses, worn parts, and the occasional surprise repair—working with iron has its highs and lows.Some days everything clicks. Machines run smooth, production flows, and we move like fire. Other days, a single sensor, hose, or pin decides it’s had enough and brings the whole operation to a crawl. Other days, its a $12 part and 8 hours of running around that shuts down a six-figure machine. 

That’s the reality of working with heavy equipment.The challenge is part of the job—and so is a well-timed wrench, a few choice words, and getting back after it. It takes patience, problem-solving, and grit to keep iron moving. When the machines are running and the work comes together, it makes the setbacks worth it.

For this project we had to sleeve the line as it ran under the road, install a siphon system, and bed everything through a rock outcropping.
