Do you do your part to attract Monarchs to your garden? Put milkweed way in the back of the yard but bring the Butterfly Bush closer to the front. There's a dwarf variety that will do the job of a large one.
This is a winning combo: Agapanthus, Butterfly and Lawn.

California's new Zone 0 wildfire rules are creating a lot of confusion for homeowners — and that confusion doesn't have to mean giving up on landscaping.
The state's new Zone 0 requirement covers the first five feet around a structure as an "ember-resistant zone," part of California's broader defensible-space push. But regulatory language doesn't tell you what to actually do with your yard — what pots are okay, which plants work, how close is too close, etc.

That's the gap Things Green Zone Zero™ is stepping in to fill. Launched by horticulturist Nick Federoff — a 40+ year veteran of horticulture, landscaping, and broadcasting — the program is an independent, non-governmental resource that translates the regulations into practical horticultural guidance: container gardening, plant selection, placement, noncombustible materials, and maintenance.

The mission is simple: Zone Zero doesn't have to mean zero garden.
If you're a California homeowner trying to figure out what belongs — and what doesn't — in that first five feet, this is worth a look.

Ever been in two places at once? I was on a hike in the middle of what I thought was nowhere and there I was…two places at once with a marker hidden by weeds. Just dumb luck I guess.

What are you doing to keep your plants alive during this heatwave?
Hosta la vista (see what I did there?) temps over 100 degrees for the last four weeks and the next 10! There's no global warming that is going to take this hosta plant hostage (dude, I did it again). Using an umbrella over this nearly deceased plant is working like a charm.
