Living Waters Aquatic Management

Living Waters Aquatic Management Services for Fish Tanks, Water Gardens, Fishing & Farm Ponds in Wichita and Kansas. Locally established & operated since 2007.

We are families who serve businesses, communities and families. Similar to a living tree, Living Waters Aquatic Management has a philosophy of structure & growth. We call this integrated philosophy the 3 disciplines. Our 3 disciplines are: Biological, Chemical & Mechanical maintenance. Our mission is to provide the best service to our clients and implement sustainable environmental practices. Our

specialty is maintenance, cleaning and installs. We are leaders in water quality field-analysis. For neighborhood ponds & lakes, we are certified w**d control applicators. But chemical maintenance with algaecides and herbicides is just one of our disciplines. Our integrated disciplines include the mechanical aspects of your pond. We reduce chemical costs with aeration systems and erosion control management. Not only do we install subsurface aeration, but we also repair fountains, waterfall pumps and plumbing. Thirdly, our aquatic maintenance technicians are well-trained in aquatic biology. We are skilled at native and invasive plant identification, fish husbandry and more. This interdisciplinary work is known as Integrated Management. Owner/operator Gerard Wellemeyer began with over 10-years experience in aquaculture. His vision for the company was simple: a focus on aquatic maintenance. The year of the startup was complicated by the subprime mortgage crisis. Wellemeyer navigated the company to success with relationship marketing and by delivering consistent results. We established in 2011 as a corporation in the State of Kansas. And with providence, humble work has led us to dynamic skill development. We manage hundreds of fishing ponds, stormwater retention basins and aquatic systems, including watergardens, freshwater and saltwater fishtank and filter systems complete with koi, tropical fish, coral reefs, live aquatic plants, or goldfish. If we cannot help, we will refer you to someone who can. The staff at Living Waters express a genuine obligation to your projects and your peace of mind. Call us today and let’s create a lasting partnership to enhance your home or business and pamper your aquatic friends.

Meet one of Africa's most formidable freshwater predators — the African Tiger Fish (Hydrocyanus vittatus). This fish has been striking fear and fascination into the hearts of anglers and aquatic enthusiasts for centuries, and honestly, it's easy to see why.

The common African Tiger Fish typically reaches 2 to 3 feet in length and can tip the scales at up to 33 lbs. But its big brother, the Goliath Tiger Fish, takes things to a whole other level — growing up to 5 feet long and weighing over 100 lbs. That's not a fish. That's a decision.

Found throughout the Nile River and other major African river systems, these fish thrive in fast-flowing, highly oxygenated waters. They're built for speed, built for the hunt, and equipped with a set of razor-sharp, interlocking teeth that mean business.

It's the kind of creature that reminds you how wild and layered the aquatic world really is — from the koi ponds and water gardens we maintain right here in Wichita to the roaring rivers of Africa. Water is never just water. There's always something incredible living in it.

Meet the Iceland Stickleback (Gasterosteus islandicus) — a tiny fish with a seriously impressive résumé.

Found only in Iceland (yes, it's that exclusive), this little fish calls the cold, crystal-clear lakes, streams, and coastal waters of Iceland home. It thrives in volcanic and glacial water systems — which, when you think about it, is basically surviving conditions most fish wouldn't even consider.

At just 4–7 cm long, the Stickleback punches well above its weight class. It's armed with distinctive spines, finely tuned to Iceland's unique water conditions, and built to handle a wide range of salinities — making it what scientists call "euryhaline." In plain terms? This fish adapts. A lot.

It's a great reminder that some of the most remarkable aquatic life operates quietly beneath the surface, in waters shaped by forces as wild as volcanic heat and glacial melt.

At Living Waters Aquatic Management, we're endlessly fascinated by what thrives in specialized water environments — it's exactly that kind of thinking that shapes how we care for the aquatic ecosystems right here in Wichita and South-Central Kansas.

Every pond, lake, and aquarium tells its own story. We're here to help yours stay healthy.

Not all impressive aquatic life lives in a Kansas pond — but that doesn't mean we can't appreciate them!

This stunning bluefin trevally was spotted in the Maldives, one of the most breathtaking places on earth for marine life. These fish are no joke when it comes to size — bluefin trevally (Caranx melampygus) can grow up to 3.5 feet long and tip the scales at over 40 pounds. They're built for speed and power, making them a prized catch for anglers and a jaw-dropping sight for divers.

Here in Wichita, our local waters are home to a completely different cast of characters — but the same principles apply: healthy water, balanced ecosystems, and thriving aquatic life all go hand in hand. Whether it's a crystal-clear koi pond, a backyard water garden, or a retention basin, the biology at work isn't all that different from what keeps these stunning fish alive halfway around the world.

Pretty cool when you think about it.

Fish spotlight: Bagrus filamentosus (silver catfish) 🐟

This sleek catfish is native to West Africa, including Mali. Those long “whiskers” (barbels) are sensory tools that help catfish find food in murky water.

If you keep fish at home, quick reminder: species like this have specific needs for tank size, filtration, and water quality. When in doubt, test your water first, then adjust.

Weekend PSA for pond owners: a fountain makes the surface look active, but it doesn’t always fix low oxygen at the bottom.

If you’re seeing fish gulping at the surface or that “pond funk” smell, it’s time to look at true aeration and circulation.

We’re local to Wichita and South-Central Kansas. If you want, tell us your pond size and depth and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Meet the Zebra Trout (Aplochiton zebra) 🐟

This cool, striped freshwater fish is endemic to the Falkland Islands, meaning it’s found naturally nowhere else on Earth.

Nature does “local-only” species better than any marketing plan. 😉

Have you ever seen one before, or have a favorite unique fish species?

Ever heard of the Great Bear Lake “Silverback” trout?

These lake trout from Great Bear Lake in Canada can get absolutely massive. Cold, clean water + a strong food chain = a fish built like a tank.

Fun fact you don’t hear every day: it’s often called the only “sushi-grade” freshwater fish, because the icy, ultra-clean conditions help keep the meat exceptionally high quality.

Big fish like this are a reminder that water quality matters. When the biology is balanced, the chemistry is right, and the mechanics (circulation, filtration, aeration) are doing their job, you get healthier systems from top to bottom.

What’s the biggest fish you’ve ever seen come out of a lake or pond?

Meet the Northern Pearl Dace.

This little fish is a great reminder of how fragile aquatic ecosystems can be. In some places it’s considered endangered, and it was even thought to be extirpated (locally gone) from New Jersey, until a population was discovered hanging on in a golf course pond.

That’s wild, but it makes sense: when water quality, habitat, and vegetation are managed well, even small pockets of water can become a lifeline.

At Living Waters, we’re big believers in integrated aquatic management (biological + chemical + mechanical) because healthy water isn’t luck, it’s stewardship.

If you’ve got a pond, lake, or stormwater basin that needs help staying balanced, we’re here.

Blue gourami are built for a world that’s warm, shallow, and sometimes low on oxygen.

In the wild, they come from slow-moving waters in Southeast Asia, like ponds, marshes, rice paddies, and quiet backwaters where plants are thick and the water can get a little “stagnant”.

Their superpower is a special “labyrinth organ” that lets them breathe air at the surface. That means they can handle habitats where other fish struggle, especially during hot spells when oxygen drops.

Aquarium tip: they love calm water, lots of cover (plants/structure), and warm temps.

If your pond is getting warm and sluggish, that’s a sign it’s time to think about circulation and oxygen. We can help you get it balanced.
