Not every ADU is for family.

In Yarmouth, one senior resident spent years trying to turn the 325-sq-ft studio at her home into a legal apartment. Maine’s 2022 ADU law finally settled it. Now the rent from that studio helps her stay in the home she loves.

ADUs aren’t only for aging parents. Sometimes they’re how the kids get to stay in Maine.

In Cape Elizabeth, one aging couple built a 750-sq-ft cottage in the side yard for their 38-year-old daughter. She has her own place, and they still have their quiet house, with Sunday dinners a lot closer.

“My goal was never to live with my children,” she said. And she doesn’t. She has her own front door, her own kitchen, and her own space, and help is across the yard when she needs it.

📊 1 in 4 older homeowners would consider building an ADU. The top reason is making room for a loved one who needs care.
📊 About half of all adults are caregivers now or expect to be someday.
