Dryer vent tip for Central Florida homes 🔥
Take a quick look at your dryer vent hose and the outside vent flap this week:
• Swap out flimsy white vinyl or foil accordion hoses for a rigid or semi-rigid metal duct. Plastic and foil sag, trap lint, and can melt or burn.
• Keep the hose short and straight behind the dryer with no kinks or crushed spots when you push it back against the wall.
• Go outside while the dryer runs. The flap should open and you should feel strong airflow. A stuck flap or weak air means lint is building up (and in Florida, lizards and birds love to nest in there).
Clogged vents are a leading cause of dryer fires, and they make every load take longer too.

Florida AC tip: check your condensate drain line! 💧

Our humidity means your AC pulls gallons of water out of the air every day. That water drains through a small PVC line, and algae and gunk love to clog it. A clogged line can back up, trip your AC's safety switch, or leak water onto ceilings and floors.

Quick homeowner fix: every month or two, pour about 1 cup of plain white vinegar into the drain line access (usually a capped T-fitting near your indoor unit). Watch for water in the drain pan, musty smells, or the AC shutting off on its own. Those are signs it's time for a pro.

⚡ Quick safety tip: Test your GFCI outlets once a month!

GFCI outlets (the ones with TEST and RESET buttons) cut the power in a split second if they sense a shock hazard. They belong in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry rooms and outdoors, and they matter even more here in Central Florida with all our rain and humidity.

How to test one:
1. Plug in a nightlight or lamp and turn it on.
2. Press TEST. The light should go off.
3. Press RESET. The light should come back on.

If the light stays on after you press TEST, or the outlet won't reset, it isn't protecting you and should be replaced. And if an outdoor outlet keeps tripping after a storm, don't just keep resetting it. That usually points to moisture or a wiring problem.

Dryer vent safety tip! Not cleaning the dryer is the leading cause of home dryer fires. Watch for these warning signs of a clogged vent:
- Clothes take more than one cycle to dry
- The dryer or laundry room feels extra hot
- A burning smell while it runs
- Lint piling up around the dryer door or the outside vent flap
Clean the lint screen after every load, and have the full vent line cleaned at least once a year.

In our Central Florida heat and humidity, your AC runs almost nonstop. A clogged filter makes it work harder, raises your power bill, and can even cause the coil to freeze up. Most homes need a new filter every 1 to 3 months, and more often if you have pets or allergies. Quick test: hold it up to the light. If you can't see light through it, it's time to swap it out.
