Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department

Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department Remember to always call 911 in an emergency. This is OWL's Official page. We welcome your positive comments. Thank you for your support.

In September 1938, the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department, was officially incorporated. It was two years of hard work for a group of concerned citizens who recognized the need for a Fire Department in the area. Many of them put up personal property and their own money to secure loans to build a building to house the apparatus and start the department. Sometimes they had to "pass

the hat" to pay electric and other bills monthly. Before OWL VFD the closest Fire Department’'s were in Pen Daw (Fairfax Station 11) to the north, Manassas to the west and Fredericksburg to the south. The first station was in the Town of Occoquan on the corner of Washington and Mill Street, which was Station 2 in PWC. You can still see the concrete pad where it was located. From there they built a building that is now the VFW in Occoquan. In 1958 they opened a second Station on Jeff Davis Hwy. They were numbered Station 2-1 in Occoquan and Station 2-2 on Jefferson Davis Highway. From there, OWL moved to the current Station 2 on F Street, opened up the Lake Ridge Station 14, and the Route 1 station, 12, relocated to Montgomery Avenue. OWL VFD’s continued success is because of the foresight and hard work of those who built the foundation and the dedication and commitment of our members who serve today. Even from our humble beginnings, OWL VFD has historically strategically planned for disaster events, keeping up on the latest training, equipment and education available. OWL VFD invests thousands of hours in professional training and certification courses. Our care and dedication to Fire and Rescue is reflected in our efforts of staying up to date and ready for the task. OWL VFD is one of the largest and busiest volunteer fire departments in the United States with over 200 members. OWL VFD provides fire suppression, EMS care, and rescue services to 80,000 residents in our 27 square mile area through the operation of three fire stations. OWL volunteer Firefighters and EMTs work the 6 pm to 6 am shift, five days a week, plus 24/7 holidays and weekends.

🚒 Congratulations to OWL’s Newest Firefighters! 🎉

Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department is proud to celebrate the graduation of the Prince William County Fire & Rescue System’s Volunteer Recruit Class 26139 — the “Haligoons!”

Held at the Prince William County Public Safety Training Center, the ceremony marked the completion of six months of rigorous academy training. While this milestone is significant, it’s only the beginning of their journey as first responders, as they will continue building skills while serving the community.

OWL Members Britney Ledinh, Justin McPherson, and Jaden Nguyen were among the graduates. Jack Finnegan, also celebrated. He already had Firefighter Level I when he joined OWL, but he was able to join this recruit class to complete Firefighter Level II, a certification required for him to serve as a Lead Firefighter.

OWL Chief Wayne Haight presented the graduates with their yellow firefighter helmets. Britney Ledinh earned the highest overall grade and was announced as the top graduate.

OWL President Todd Hewitt also attended to present the Leadership Award on behalf of the Prince William Chamber of Commerce. The recruits vote on the class award, which OWL Member Jaden Nguyen received.

Congratulations to OWL’s newest Firefighters!

🚨Engine 502 was recently dispatched for a tree down, blocking travel lanes on Tanyard Hill Road.

This incident serves as an important reminder of what to do if you encounter a downed tree blocking a roadway:
🚧 Even if the road looks passable, conditions may be unstable - use an alternate route.
🚧 If the tree is touching or near downed power lines, stay away. Never touch the tree or anything in contact with wires.
🚧 If there is immediate danger, such as fire or live wires, call 911 immediately.
🚧 Never attempt to remove a large downed tree yourself.

🚒 Future First Responders Visit Station 2! 🚑

🌞Our Training Officer, Cynthia Thackwray, recently welcomed some very special guests to Station 2—Daisy Troop 80242!

During their visit, the troop toured the station and learned about several of our apparatus, including Rescue 502, Collapse 502, Ambulance 502, and Medic 502. Their hands-on experience helped them earn their Safety Award—great job, Daisy Troop! 🌼👏

Officer Thackwray also arranged for a local police unit to stop by, giving the daisies an opportunity to meet a law enforcement officer and learn more about how they serve our community. 🚓💙

The visit wrapped up with each troop member picking out a book from our Little Free Library 📚—a perfect ending to a fun and educational visit!

We hope our young visitors left feeling inspired to become the next generation of first responders right here in our community! ❤️🚒🚑

Thank you to the Troop Leaders for sharing these photos with us.

🐾 Puppy Rescue! 🐾

This past Monday, crews from Ambulance 502 and Engine 502 responded to Belmont Bay for a unique rescue.

Bella, a small pup, slipped free from her collar and leash and, unfortunately, fell into a storm drain. Thanks to a quick response and teamwork, Bella was safely rescued. 🐶

While she experienced some hyperventilation during the scary ordeal, we’re happy to report that Bella had no other injuries. ❤️👏🚑🚒🐾

🎉Congratulations to OWL Member Avery Wise for completing the Prince William County Fire & Rescue System Operational Medical Director’s (OMD) requirements to serve as an endorsed provider.

EMT Wise joined OWL as a Junior Member in October 2024. Last year, he earned both the Virginia State EMT-Basic and National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) certifications. Upon turning 18 in November, his status was changed to Active Operational member.

His interest in EMS was piqued while serving as a lifeguard. A friend encouraged him to join OWL to pursue becoming an EMT.

EMT Wise recently graduated from Logos Classical Academy. Over the summer, he plans to continue training to become a Lead EMT and Ambulance driver, before taking leave to attend the Fall Semester of college.

We’re proud of his dedication and accomplishments.

This past Saturday, Engine 512 was dispatched to a reported structure fire at a local apartment complex. Upon arrival, crews discovered a fire burning in an outside, mulch-covered area.

This incident serves as an important reminder to be mindful when disposing of items that could ignite highly flammable materials, such as mulch. Fires like this can escalate quickly and pose a threat to nearby vehicles and buildings.

Thanks to the quick thinking of an observant resident and their prompt call to 911, this fire was extinguished before it could spread—potentially preventing significant damage.
