Two beautiful examples of Mother Natures creativity. I came upon these in a recent assessment near Redmond Ridge/Trilogy. The remnants of a once huge cedar stump is a stark reminder of these giant trees that once grew in our Salish Sea region. The stump of this Thuja plicata, Western Red Cedar remains majestic today, emblematic of its long heritage. The tree growing upon a stump is a Western Hemlock, growing out of a Western Red Cedar stump. The 'legs' of the Hemlock tree are actually roots that are now supporting the tree. The Hemlock tree is likely to remain standing, even after the cedar stump as decayed another few decades. Discovering these gems is one of the great rewards or tree health assessments. Walking in the woods!
