Sometimes you have to BREAK THROUGH before you can LEVEL UP. đź’Ş

And if you’re a business owner, a leader, an employee—or simply someone who has been carrying more than usual lately—you probably understand exactly what that means.

A breakthrough isn’t the absence of adversity.

It’s the moment you decide adversity doesn’t get the final say.

Sometimes the breakthrough comes disguised as the season you never wanted.

It looks like frustration.
It looks like uncertainty.
It looks like financial pressure.
It looks like losing something you thought you needed.
It looks like plans changing.
It looks like people getting tired and discouraged.
And sometimes it looks like wondering how much more you can possibly carry.

But those moments can also force us to do something incredibly important:

MOVE.

Find another opportunity.
Knock on another door.
Make another phone call.
Build another relationship.
Try the idea you’ve been putting off.
Take care of your people.
Protect what you’ve built.
And keep showing up.

That is the breakthrough.

P đź”§ A Look Behind the Scenes at One of Our Lawton Projects

Some projects start out as a repair and quickly become something much bigger.

Our team has been working through a pretty extensive commercial dock leveler rehabilitation in the Lawton area, and by the time this project is completed, we will have rebuilt or repaired a significant portion of this system.

As we worked through the equipment, each stage required evaluating what could safely remain in service, what needed to be repaired, and what needed to be replaced altogether. The work has included structural steel repairs and fabrication, welding, component replacement, electrical repairs, replacement of the wiring harness, and plenty of troubleshooting and adjustments along the way.

The pictures tell part of the story. There is a big difference between simply replacing a component and actually rehabilitating an aging piece of commercial equipment so that its structural, mechanical and electrical systems all work together properly again.

Dock equipment takes an incredible amount of abuse throughout its service life—heavy loads, vibration, impact, weather exposure and constant movement. Eventually, wear isn’t always isolated to one component. Once you get into the repair, you may find several areas that have to be addressed before the equipment can be returned to reliable operation.

That’s why this type of work is a process: inspect, diagnose, fabricate, repair, replace, adjust, test and verify.

We’re just about at the finish line on this one, and we thought it was worth sharing because most people never get to see just how much work can go into keeping the equipment behind a commercial operation functioning.

⚡ NEW EQUIPMENT DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN A SIMPLE SWAP ⚡

These photos are a great example of why electrical planning needs to be part of an HVAC equipment replacement before the new equipment ever arrives onsite.

When an existing commercial HVAC unit is replaced, it is easy to assume the electrical connection will simply transfer from the old unit to the new one.

That assumption can become an expensive problem.

The replacement equipment may have its electrical compartment or disconnect connection on an entirely different side of the unit. The manufacturer may also require different conductor sizes, overcurrent protection, disconnecting means, grounding/bonding provisions, or other electrical components than the equipment being removed.

In this installation, the existing electrical feed simply wasn’t located where the new Rheem commercial unit required it. That means the electrical installation had to be properly evaluated and extended to serve the new equipment.

🔌 WHY VERIFYING THE ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS BEFORE INSTALLATION MATTERS

Before replacing commercial HVAC equipment, someone qualified should verify:

• The nameplate voltage and phase
• The manufacturer’s Minimum Circuit Ampacity (MCA)
• The Maximum Overcurrent Protection (MOCP/MOP)
• Existing breaker/fuse size and type
• Existing conductor size, type, insulation and condition
• Grounding and bonding
• Disconnect requirements and location
• Available electrical capacity
• The actual location of the electrical connection on the new equipment
• Whether the existing raceway/conductors can legally and safely be reused or must be modified or replaced

Simply knowing that the old unit had power does not establish that the existing electrical installation is appropriate for the replacement unit.

⚠️ THIS IS WHY THE TRADES NEED TO WORK TOGETHER

A licensed HVAC contractor may be highly qualified to install, commission and service HVAC equipment.

That does not automatically make the HVAC contractor the appropriate licensed professional to design, modify or extend the building’s electrical system.

The same works in reverse: an electrical contractor isn’t there to perform refrigeration work simply because electrical components are involved.

Each trade has its own licensing, training, code requirements and area of responsibility.

When an HVAC replacement requires the branch circuit, feeder, raceway, disconnect, conductors or other electrical components to be altered, bringing in a qualified electrical contractor protects everyone involved — the HVAC contractor, building owner, facility and ultimately the equipment itself.

đź’° A LITTLE PLANNING CAN PREVENT A BIG PROBLEM

Discovering these issues before installation day can prevent:

❌ Emergency electrical work
❌ Installation delays
❌ Improperly sized conductors or protection
❌ Improvised electrical connections
❌ Failed inspections
❌ Equipment damage
❌ Warranty concerns
❌ Additional labor and unexpected costs
❌ Delays getting critical equipment operational

On commercial projects, particularly facilities operating under tight schedules, these details matter.

Measure it. Verify it. Read the equipment specifications. Confirm the electrical requirements. Then install it correctly.

The goal isn’t for one trade to replace another.

The goal is for qualified professionals from each trade to work together and make sure the entire installation is safe, code-compliant and ready to operate.

⚡ GFCI PROTECTION: WHAT A HOME INSPECTION CAN SEE — AND WHAT A LICENSED ELECTRICIAN MUST VERIFY

One of the most common electrical items we see on home inspection and TRR reports is:

“No GFCI protection present.”

But here is something every homeowner, buyer, seller, Realtor, and inspector should understand:

Not seeing a GFCI receptacle does NOT automatically mean there is no GFCI protection.

A GFCI receptacle with TEST and RESET buttons is only one method of providing GFCI protection.

The National Electrical Code (NEC) requires GFCI protection in specified locations and applications. That protection can be provided by a properly installed GFCI circuit breaker at the electrical panel or, depending upon the circuit configuration, by an upstream GFCI receptacle protecting receptacles connected to its LOAD side. Eaton specifically explains that a GFCI circuit breaker can protect the entire branch circuit, while a properly installed GFCI receptacle can provide protection to downstream loads. (Eaton)

Leviton likewise explains that GFCI receptacles can provide feed-through protection to ordinary receptacles wired downstream. (Leviton)

⚡ SO WHY DON’T WE JUST INSTALL ANOTHER GFCI ANYWAY?

Because professional electrical work isn’t about installing unnecessary devices simply because an outlet doesn’t look GFCI protected.

If a receptacle is already properly protected by a GFCI breaker at the panel, installing another GFCI receptacle at that location generally does not create a second level of required GFCI protection. The branch circuit is already protected.

In other words:

GFCI protection does not have to be duplicated at every receptacle.

Putting multiple GFCI devices in series can also unnecessarily complicate the system.

Imagine a homeowner plugs something into a garage receptacle and suddenly loses power. Is the reset at that receptacle? Another GFCI across the garage? A GFCI in another location upstream? Or the GFCI breaker at the electrical panel?

Now troubleshooting becomes more complicated than necessary.

And there can be an even more important practical issue: when multiple GFCI devices are protecting the same branch, a ground-fault event may cause more than one protective device to operate. Leviton specifically notes, for example, that when its Smart GFCI is installed on a branch protected by a GFCI breaker, a ground fault can result in both the breaker and the outlet tripping. That doesn’t mean installing two GFCIs in series is universally prohibited. It means additional GFCI devices aren’t automatically necessary simply because somebody doesn’t see TEST/RESET buttons on the receptacle.

⚡ THIS IS WHERE PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS MATTER

A home inspector performs an important function. An inspection can identify visible conditions and potential concerns that deserve further evaluation.

But a home inspection is not the same thing as an electrical diagnosis performed by a licensed electrical professional.

If an inspection report says:

“No GFCI protection observed,”

the next step should not automatically be:

“Install a GFCI receptacle.”

The proper next step is to determine:

Is this receptacle already GFCI protected?

That requires understanding the circuit.

A qualified electrical professional can identify the breaker supplying the circuit, determine whether GFCI protection exists upstream, identify downstream receptacles, operate the protective device, test the affected outlets, and determine whether an actual correction is required.

⚡ THE PHOTOS HERE ARE A GREAT EXAMPLE

The panel contains a 20-amp Eaton GFCI circuit breaker.

Other photographs show ordinary-looking receptacles identified as “GFCI Protected Outlet.”

Still other locations contain actual GFCI receptacles with TEST and RESET buttons.

Those are different configurations—but an ordinary-looking receptacle can still be GFCI protected when the protection is correctly provided upstream.

The NEC is concerned with whether the required GFCI protection exists, not whether every protected receptacle has a TEST and RESET button on its face. Eaton’s NEC guidance specifically recognizes branch-circuit GFCI protection located at the breaker, receptacle, or another appropriate upstream location depending upon the application. (Eaton)

⚡ THIS IS WHY LICENSED ELECTRICAL PROFESSIONALS ARE CALLED AFTER THE INSPECTION

Sometimes we inspect the item and determine:

The inspector was correct. A repair is necessary.

Other times we determine:

The concern was based on what was visible, but testing shows that the receptacle is already properly GFCI protected.

And sometimes we find something entirely different that cannot be determined from looking at the receptacle alone.

That’s not a criticism of the purpose of a home inspection. It’s an important distinction between screening for potential problems and professionally diagnosing an electrical system.

A home inspector identifies concerns.

A licensed electrical professional determines what the electrical system is actually doing and what correction, if any, is appropriate.

Before replacing devices, adding redundant protection, or performing electrical repairs simply because a report says an outlet “isn’t GFCI,” have the circuit properly evaluated.

⚡ You cannot always determine GFCI protection by looking at the receptacle.

⚡ Upstream protection is still protection.

⚡ More devices do not automatically mean more safety.

⚡ Test the circuit. Verify the protection. Then make the repair that is actually necessary.

Sometimes, when you talk about the integrity of a company, you have to talk about the people behind it.

Tonight, I want to take a minute to recognize one of the owners of Electrical Service Professionals—who also happens to be my husband, Jason.

For several years, Jason has dealt with a tremendous amount of pain. Just a little over 10 days ago, he was finally able to undergo a surgery that we had waited a long time for.

And after a very short period of recovery, there he was again—back beside his crew, back in the field, and back doing what he has spent more than 30 years doing.

Getting the job done.

That says something about the kind of company we have built.

ESP isn’t a company where the owners sit somewhere behind a desk and expect everyone else to carry the load. Our owners know the work because we’ve DONE the work. We understand what we ask of our employees because we’ve stood beside them doing it.
