Having just picked a load of scale insects from my bay trees, I went and checked my smaller apple tree and I'm blooming glad I did! A few insects on a well-established plant isn't too much to worry about, they're food for other creatures after all. They're worth keeping an eye on though as if they get out of hand they can stress and even kill your plants.

Now I've trimmed out the worst affected (non-fruiting) branches, and squished/picked off the rest. From here on in it's a good job for the children to do, they love hunting down villains ☠️

Even "wild" areas can benefit from a bit of love and care. This zone was overrun with Spotted Medick when I took it on. I cleared as much as I could before re-seeding, but the ground was saturated with its spiky little seeds and I'm still pulling it out now. It's a good ground cover plant but golly it spreads, flattening and covering other plants as it goes. Along with Goose Grass it can be something of a pest!

The geraniums have done incredibly well this year also. Normally I'd leave them but I opted to thin them out to allow light and air to the soil and surrounding plants.

These are the "after" pictures after spending nearly two hours clearing out these sections and one more at the end of the alley. There's still more to be done, but that will have to wait until the bin has been emptied!

A lot of plants didn't survive into spring. They were hit with a double whammy - the hot, dry summer didn't allow them to store enough energy to survive the hard winter that followed.

Some, however, just look dead and need a good bit of tlc to get them restarted again. Give the bark a little scratch in a few places before pulling that "dead" plant out. If any of it is showing green there are some roots still hanging on in there and it'll likely come back again with the right care. You'll be saving the plant and your investment!

Hi, I'm Sadie, and after a few years off to raise my family I'm keen to get my hands dirty and work on improving your gardens.

Whether you like your surroundings low maintenance, formal, cottage-style, or more wild I'm happy to get stuck in. I try to keep things as environmentally friendly as possible, using minimal chemical intervention, tailoring planting to it's environment, and my trusty push-bike to get about.

I'm happy to take on regular maintenance as well as one-off garden tidies, feel free to contact me to discuss, either a message here or email [email protected].
