We are receiving reports that bears are active. Please understand It is not unusual to see a bear on the . We provide great bear habitat. The most important thing we can do to help both bears and people stay safe is to make sure all human food is stored properly. This includes anything with a scent, e.g., toothpaste, gum, empty food wrappers, garbage, etc.
DO NOT FEED BEARS! Sometimes food-habituated bears will follow people at a distance, “begging” for food. Although this can be very disconcerting, do not throw food at the bear in an effort to distract it. All this does is reinforce that people = tasty food and that bear will be even bolder with the next hiker.
Campers should always store their food in a bear-resistant container unless it is being prepared or consumed. A vehicle with rolled up windows and locked doors is usually effective if food storage lockers are unavailable in developed campgrounds.
For backcountry visitors, every district office has bear canisters available for free rental.
