[月見 | Tsukimi] Thursday October 1st, was the day of “Tsukimi” in Japan, the day of Autumn moon viewing. A day (actually night) that the Japanese celebrate the moon being at its fullest and most beautiful. As such, for centuries, it is also the night where Japanese express gratitude to the celestial body for the bountiful harvest and to pray for more of the same in the seasons to come. The Japanese people provide offerings such as rice dumplings, and decorate their rooms with pampas grass and other autumn produce. Rabbits are also an ever present character during these events as Japanese folklore say that rabbits are from, and live, on the moon. In fact, the tale explains that the dark shades on the moon's surface are rabbits pounding mochi, Japanese rice dumplings!

[ひまわり | Himawari] As we wind down the summer season, it also spells the end of the Sunflower, or "himawari", season in Japan. These flowers are a popular in the summer and you can find huge sunflower fields, housing millions of flowers, across the country. These flowers are celebrated for their beauty and because of their symbol of longevity. Since 2011, they have also taken on another important role in Japan, purifying the toxic waste created from the Fukushima Nuclear Plant after the 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami Disaster. Sunflowers have the amazing ability to soak up the toxins and radioactivity from the soil and, as such, around 8 million of these flowers have been planted in the region. Truly a symbol of longevity (and hope!).
