We are currently planning one of our first ‘real’ borders.

Up until now, our plantings have really just been about managing stock. Testing combinations and building up plants we can propagate into the future.

This border will be mostly purple, blue and white, with some cool-toned yellows (leucanthemum, nepeta, stachys, lupins, geranium, verbena, veronicastrum and many more).

A big part of the thinking here (and in the layout of the lawn) has been making sure our old oak has the breathing room it needs so you can really take in just how impressive it is. That’s also meant paying attention to the shadier parts of this border - choosing colours that will lift it, and plants that can handle shade through the day with strong afternoon sun along the house.

A huge amount of work has gone into our hardscaping around the house over the past few months.

As is often the case when working across acres of garden, each finished section leads into another still in progress. In the meantime, we’re learning to enjoy the steady progress - despite everything feeling a little unfinished. So, here is the gravel we recently laid with a view of our labourers working on the next section of the garden 🐷

Persicaria ‘Blackfield’, Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’, Kniphofia Uvaria foliage, backed by Silphium perfoliatum which had finished flowering but was kept for structure.

Everything at the moment in this bed is trial and error as we get used to growing in, what to us, is still a fairly new climate. Testing plant heights and combinations before placing in more final mass planted beds largely inspired by
