Last month, existing-home sales posted the largest increase in the South and West, while falling in the Northeast. Tight housing inventories continue to plague the Northeast, which saw a 4.1% annual decrease in home sales last month but also the nation’s highest yearly increase in its home prices.

Here’s a closer look at how existing-home sales fared across the country in September, according to NAR’s existing-home sales report:

Northeast: Existing-home sales fell 2.1% in September compared to August, dropping to an annual rate of 470,000. Sales are down 4.1% from a year ago. Median price: $523,600, up 4.7% from September 2025.

Midwest: Sales held steady last month at an annual rate of 930,000. Still, sales were down 2.1% compared to a year ago. Median price: $329,600, up 3.1% annually.

South: Sales rose 2.8% month-over-month to an annual rate of 1.86 million. Sales were down slightly by 0.5% compared to September 2025. Median price: $361,000, up just slightly by 0.2% from a year ago.

West: Sales rose 2.8% in September compared to August, reaching an annual rate of 730,000. Sales, however, were down 5.2% year-over-year. Median price: $613,600, down 0.3% from a year ago.

Agent Takeaway: Rising mortgage rates continue to weigh on home sales this fall, but increasing inventory and longer days on the market are giving buyers more negotiating power as sellers adjust prices to local conditions. First-time buyers, individual investors and second-home buyers remain resilient and are still finding new opportunities in this shifting market."

I loved my stay at Amanda’s! The space was great for me and my 2 family members! The view of the beach in the morning was amazing! Also I love to cook and was able to cook Christmas dinner. They had every kitchen utensil available! Will stay again if I'm ever in town! 10/10 recommend.

If you're considering a move to Murrells Inlet, one of the biggest questions is: Where should I actually live?

🥇 1. Prince Creek — best overall

Prince Creek is probably where I'd start if you want a really nice place to live rather than a vacation-oriented neighborhood. It's a large master-planned area with multiple individual communities, so you get everything from more affordable homes to upscale gated properties.

🥈 2. Wachesaw Plantation — best upscale/Lowcountry feel

Wachesaw Plantation is one of the communities I'd put at the top if someone told me, "I want beautiful, established, upscale Murrells Inlet." It's gated, has mature landscaping, larger homesites and a distinctly Lowcountry atmosphere around the river/marsh environment.

🥉 3. Bays of Prince Creek — best combination of nice + practical

For a buyer who wants a nice neighborhood without necessarily jumping into $1M+ homes, I'd definitely look here. It's gated and has a more polished, planned-community feel, while still being close to the restaurants, shopping and coastal attractions that make Murrells Inlet desirable.

💰 4. Wachesaw Plantation East — best value

This is one I would really pay attention to if you're looking at real estate from an investment/value perspective. The homes and condos can be substantially less expensive than Wachesaw Plantation proper. Realtor.com currently shows a median listing price around $265K, versus roughly $553K for Wachesaw Plantation.

🌴 5. Salters Cove — best for beach lifestyle

Salters Cove is particularly interesting if you want to be closer to the beach and have that golf-cart/beach-town lifestyle. This would be higher on my list for someone who says, "I don't necessarily need a huge house. I want to be close to the beach and actually enjoy where I live."

🏡 6. Collins Creek Landing — best luxury/privacy

Collins Creek Landing is a gated custom-home community in the Prince Creek area with larger, wooded homesites and a much more private feel.
