In addition to my work (ecological surveying / monitoring), I have also been the Chair of a local conservation community for the past two years.

Known as LARC (the Llanteg and Amroth Renaturing Community), it has engaged with various governmental and national bodies in order to create a better environment for our little corner of Pembrokeshire.

To date, we have:

RESEARCHED into the distribution of the road verge flora and how that flora is affected by current mowing regimes in the area - this has led to a (collaborative) change in the mowing management by Pembrokeshire Council in our area (health and safety taking priority!);

COLLABORATED with with the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authorities in their 70 trees project;

MONITORED and researched the state of one of our local streams, under our project name 'Keep The Streams Clean' - this is now being rolled out to other streams in the local area, including NT land, as well as enabling connections with other similar projects in Pembrokeshire and beyond;

ENGAGED an independent ecologist (so, another ecologist -we've got to stick together!) in the development of our Local Nature Recovery Action Plan (or 'L-NRAP').

Documentation will be available through the LARC site primarily, but I will highlight them here at some point as well.

My yearly scything is finally coming to an end, and *that* despite the really wet season we've had this year! Haycocks are now being dismembered, with hay being put into the correct storage piles - and any with invasive species in being discarded. Sadly, we still have a couple of areas with 'legacy' plantings such as the dreaded Crocosmia, and some unusual meadow exotics like a Chinese relative of fly honeysuckle, which is a pain to get rid of as it grows through the grass and upper soil and roots as it goes.

And, as tidying up one of the haycocks, I find a speckled wood caterpillar has decided to call it 'chrysalis home'! The grass stalk was carefully placed somewhere safer ...... Still, makes this year's frustrations all go away - easily pleased, you could say!

LARC Chair Addition: Members of LARC, please remember the meeting at the Llanteg Village Hall on the 8th December (7pm), where Toby Phelps is giving a talk on birds and their conservation in Pembrokeshire.
