Dwarf Crested Iris (Iris cristata) is a small, herbaceous perennial here in Maryland, reaching only 4–6 inches tall. Small but mighty, it slowly spreads into the most beautiful woodland carpet over time through shallow rhizomes tucked beneath the leaf litter.
In the right conditions, rich woodland soil, dappled shade, and consistent moisture, it will gently naturalize and form quiet little colonies across the forest floor.
As if she belongs in an art gallery, this iris has soft washes of lavender-blue petals, with golden crests painted at the center of each bloom. The flower almost looks hand brushed in watercolour.
Beyond its beauty, it helps stabilize soil, supports early pollinators, and brings softness and life to shaded woodland ecosystems long before summer arrives.
