Verge Gardening for People and Planet
1 May 9.30 till 11.30
Join Gayle Dallaston founder of The Shady Lanes Project and author of 'Garden on the Verge: A New Approach'
Resident-planted native verge gardens supporting council street trees is the fastest, cheapest, most doable way to increase shade and biodiversity in our region. Over the years, I've studied what works, what doesn't, why people give up, why disputes with neighbours and councils happen, and why some people never start.

You'll learn how to navigate the different views of the many conflicting users and uses of this space. You'll get practical tips on which plants work and why. We explore the council policies and why they matter. (Moreton Bay and Brisbane council policies are different.)

One of the reasons for planting local native plants in our verge gardens is to help people become familiar with them. Most Australians don't know their local plants and they don't sell them at the big nurseries.
Local community nurseries are the best place to source plants.

We can all help our street trees thrive by replacing grass with native verge gardens. Increases biodiversity in the soil, help rainwater soak in, and protects from mowing equipment Check out your local council policy and these free resources to get started. https://shadylanes.com.au

Street trees often grow in appalling soil, have little root space, are rarely watered and get aggressively trimmed. But this tough species rises to the challenge.
