Within the Circ-Boost , led by the Građevinski fakultet u Beogradu GRF , 𝗮 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀.

The system features:

This approach 𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘂𝘀𝗲 of structural steel elements, reducing waste and extending the lifecycle of construction materials.

Following the #𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗛𝘂𝗯 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 & 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆-𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 (5 March 2026), partners from BIOBUILD, Circ-Boost, Reconstruct EU project, ATRIUM Project, and Drastic came together to reflect on how circular and bio-based solutions can accelerate the transition toward energy-efficient buildings.

💡 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁:

🔹 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲 - 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘀

Promising materials (mycelium, lignin, PHA, plant-based binders) exist, but lack of reliable performance data limits their uptake.

🔹 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺

Solutions are ready, but regulation, certification, and market demand are not yet aligned.

🔹 𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲

Innovation is fragmented - stronger knowledge transfer between research, industry and policymakers is key.

🔹 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻

From design for disassembly to lifecycle thinking, circular principles must be embedded from the very beginning.

🔹 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹

Standardisation, harmonised data, and supportive policy & procurement frameworks are critical enablers.

📢 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿:

– Better data & lifecycle evidence

Last week, the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Civil Engineering hosted 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 as part of the Circ-Boost project, 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

🟠 The trainings brought together researchers, engineers, and students to discuss sustainable reuse of structural steel and circular design approaches for steel-concrete composite systems.

Prof. Jelena Dobric presented 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀, highlighting key regulatory and technical challenges - from testing protocols and geometric tolerances to adapting design standards.

Asst. Prof. Isidora Jakovljević then presented 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗺-𝘁𝗼-𝗰𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗻 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀, including results from experimental testing and numerical simulations conducted during the Circ-Boost Pilot 3 prototype testing activities.

Assoc. Prof. Milan Spremic introduced 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹-𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, explaining how such systems can extend the life cycle of existing structures or enable their future reuse.

Finally, Asst. Prof. Nina Gluhović presented 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗻-𝘁𝗼-𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 developed within Circ-Boost Pilot 3, using anchor couplers to enable efficient dismantling and reuse of steel structural elements.

Another milestone for circular housing innovation! ♻️

The first experimental campaigns assessing decoupled masonry infill systems for the 3R Pilot House have been successfully completed with the support of SDA-engineering GmbH, and a generous donation of Regupol recycled rubber INODIS strips.

🧪 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝟭 – 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹–𝗥𝘂𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗿–𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲)
A beam–infill interface composed of reused steel elements, rubber layers, and reused bricks was tested under seismic loading.
The results confirmed:
✅ Sufficient shear strength
✅ High deformation capacity
✅ Ability to withstand very strong seismic actions
✅ Improved damage mitigation

The second campaign evaluated whether masonry infill can be mounted and later demounted within the precast frame system.

♻️ Digital roadmap towards circular cities of the future

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zorana Petojevic ( Građevinski fakultet u Beogradu GRF ) recently published an article in a Serbian professional magazine 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 (𝗖𝗘) 𝗠𝗮𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲, developed within the Circ-Boost project.

Why does this matter?

🏢 Buildings are responsible for:

• 36% of total energy consumption

• 40% of greenhouse gas emissions

• 35% of total waste in the EU

At the same time, 30–40% of global raw materials are used in construction and demolition activities.
