The great depression; Innovations at Homes
During the harsh economic realities of the Great Depression, American homes underwent a dramatic transformation. Gone were the opulent furnishings and dedicated rooms of the Roaring Twenties. Necessity became the mother of invention, and functionality replaced extravagance as the guiding principle. Streamline Moderne, with its sleek lines and focus on utility, replaced the lavish curves of Art Deco. Furniture started doing double duty - ottomans became hidden storage solutions, and beds cleverly folded into walls or desks.
Affordability became paramount. Expensive materials like mahogany gave way to more practical choices like plywood and steel.
