Today we remember Graham Greene — a man whose spirit walked tall, whose voice carried the strength of our ancestors into the halls of Hollywood, and whose presence on screen opened doors that had been shut too long for our people. Born in Ohsweken, Six Nations territory, he journeyed from odd jobs and humble stages to the bright lights of the world, never forgetting where he came from, never forgetting who he was.

When he stepped into the role of Kicking Bird in Dances with Wolves, he did more than act — he carved a path. He showed the world that our stories are not relics, not shadows, but living, breathing truths carried in the dignity of our languages, our humor, our grief, and our resilience. From Thunderheart to Wind River, from Longmire to Reservation Dogs, he kept building that bridge, brick by brick, for every Indigenous actor who would come after.

But beyond the lights and cameras, he was remembered as a man of morals, of character, of deep laughter and quiet strength. He carried his people with him. And now, as his spirit travels on, we give thanks that he did not just play roles — he made space for nations to be seen.

Let us honor him not only with our words, but with our actions: by telling our stories boldly, by holding our languages close, by encouraging our children to dream without boundaries. Graham Greene’s legacy is not just in awards or stars on the walk of fame. It is in the fire he tended, the fire we now carry forward.

Nearly all cases of cervical cancer, about 99%, are caused by high-risk HPV infections, a virus so common that 8 in 10 people will contract it at some point in their lives.
A bit of positive news? Mexican scientist Eva Ramón Gallegos is the first to eradicate the virus in 29 women. This is a major medical advancement and gives hope to the millions affected by the virus, 10% of whom are Hispanic women.
Gallegos is a global award-winning scientist and her massive breakthrough came after years of research and the use of photodynamic therapy that involves applying delta-aminolevulinic acid to the cervix. It then transforms into an active form and when exposed to laser light eliminates infected cells without damaging healthy tissue. Eradicated HPV viruses could be a drop in cervical cancer numbers.

The Oneida Nation, part of the powerful Six Nations Confederacy, played a significant role during the American Revolution by choosing to support the American cause. While the majority of the Confederacy chose to support England, most of the Oneida and some of their dependents, the Tuscaroras, sided with the Americans. This alliance was influenced in part by Rev. Samuel Kirkland, the Oneida's missionary since 1766, who immersed himself in the Oneida's lifestyle and became a counselor and mediator in their local disputes. Kirkland's alignment with a Boston-based religious commission drew the Oneida's attention closer to the political views and influence of the "Rebels" there. The Oneida found it difficult to believe that Kirkland and the others who brought so much good to them could truly be as evil as the British claimed. These beliefs, along with a loss of sovereignty under the British, led the Oneida to support the American cause in the war.During the period that the Americans garrisoned the fort, the Oneida provided them with information, warriors, scouts, spies, and aided the troops in catching deserters. From 1777 into early 1778, the Oneida were able to give the largest amount of physical support to the war. They fought valiantly in several key battles of the American War for Independence including the battles of Oriskany, Saratoga, and Barren Hill. The Oneida's choice to side with the Americans was a significant contribution to the Revolutionary War, earning them the title of the United State’s first allies. Despite their significant contributions, the Oneida's role in the American Revolution has often been left out of mainstream American history.

Samoset, also known as Somerset, was a sagamore from the Abenaki tribe and the first American Indian to interact with the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony in New England. Born around 1590 in Maine, he learned English from fishermen who frequented Monhegan Island and was familiar with most local ship captains. On March 16, 1621, Samoset entered Plymouth Colony, greeted the colonists in English with "Welcome, Englishmen", and asked for beer.He stayed overnight with the Pilgrims and later returned with five other Indians carrying deer skins to trade. However, as it was a Sunday, the colonists declined to trade but offered them food. Samoset returned on March 22, 1621, with Squanto, the last surviving member of the Patuxet tribe. Squanto, who spoke better English than Samoset, arranged a meeting with Massasoit. Samoset is believed to have passed away around 1653 in Pemaquid.

Joe Medicine Crow, a member of the Crow Nation, served as a scout in the U.S. Army's 103rd Infantry Division during World War II. He accomplished all four traditional Crow feats required to become a war chief while fighting in Europe. He touched an enemy without killing him, disarmed an enemy by taking his weapon, led a successful war party, and stole 50 horses from the SS, an act of bravery and resourcefulness. His actions not only earned him the title of war chief but also highlighted the courage and skill of Native American soldiers during the war.Medicine Crow's achievements were recognized with several honors, including the Bronze Star Medal and the Légion d'honneur.
