Part 2 student ideas coming to life:
Three more activities designed in collaboration with year 5/6 students.
These are a combination of ideas from multiple students.

Part 1: student ideas coming to life.
Earlier this year I worked with some year 5/6 students to come up with ideas for ground murals with an educational purpose for their upstairs walkway.
Students thought about the areas, the limitations, types of movement, and what else was in the area.
A couple of indigenous students liked the idea of a design near the First Nations room and sketched out something similar to this.

What do you think?

Birds (and turtle) of a feather.
Some of the features on a recent ground mural about life at a Top End billabong: brolgas dancing, jacana walking across the lilypads, spoonbill, jabiru and a little turtle.
Once again, special credit goes to Roy Anderson for allowing me to use his fabulous photos as reference.

have finished this little 12mx1m mural recently about life around the Billabong.

The design brief was to incorporate aspects from a previous mural and to simplify it as the previous mural was very busy, was peeling off, had faded, and had been painted by multiple people (students) with craft paint.

Special thanks to photographer Roy Anderson for allowing me to use his fabulous images as references. They have been invaluable and very much appreciated.

The school community are absolutely loving the update.

Another big week for .
Design Brief: 120 board (maths tool) in the playground with F-35A planes including 75 Squadron tail-flash (magpie), Robinson R22 and R44.
Many of the families attending this school are either associated with the RAAF Tindal Air base or local pastoral properties who use the helicopters for mustering.
After seeking permission from RAAF and ADF, and sourcing clearer images of the 75 Squadron tail flashing from aviation photographer Vonarx (you are a champion Shane), and days of drawing, travelling 300kms to Katherine, and then 6 days of painting 12 hours a day, I am pretty happy with the result.

We are greeted with some of the most glorious dawn colours each morning in the community.
The school is situated on the banks of the Daly River, next to the local church.
We are so fortunate to have this opportunity to create a bright colourful playground in this school.

Driving around the Daly River region we have witnessed a plethora of bird life due to the huge billabongs surrounding the community.
The school logo features a brolga, and one of the classes is named after this lanky stork.
Curlews are everywhere. The local kids tell me they are called Alala (al-lal-la).

When I was a primary school teacher I used to make activities on large sheets of plastic for kids to jump on. One was a pond with 26 lilypads, each with a letter of the alphabet, for those kinaesthetic learners who found movement helped them to learn. They would spell out their spelling words on it.
Skip forward many years, and I am now creating the same activity for other teachers and students to use.
The Daly River region in the NT is home to the pig-nosed turtle. The locals tell me it is good eating, roasted over a fire, a white meat that tastes a bit like gamey chicken.

First week, despite our little 'bump' disrupting our flow, we managed to complete a huge section of ground murals. The barra is in front of the canteen area, and the brolga is in front of a classroom called The Brolgas.
More to come. Watch this space.
