The symphony of nature whispers through the ancient grooves of wooden sash windows, each one a testament to the craftsmanship of a bygone era. Their warm embrace, the gentle creak of the sash, and the organic scent of aged oak or pine invite the outside in, creating a harmonious marriage between mankind and the environment. In stark contrast, the sliding pane of PVC windows glides open with a hollow sound, a stark reminder of the synthetic world outside its gleaming frame. While both offer a gateway to the outdoors, the wooden sash window, with its storied past and timeless elegance, stands as a bastion of authenticity against the tide of modernity's plastic embrace.

The tactile experience of a wooden sash window is unrivaled by its PVC counterpart. The smooth, cool touch of wood under one's fingertips as you slide the sash upward invites a connection with the window that is almost sensual. Each wooden window is like a piece of artisanal furniture, a unique creation shaped by the hands of a skilled carpenter who understood the intricate dance between form and function. The grain of the wood tells a story, a silent narrative of the tree's life, its growth rings a chronicle of seasons past. This is a stark contrast to the uniform, lifeless PVC, which despite its practicality, lacks the soulfulness that wooden windows exude.

Consider the stoic resilience of the wooden sash windows that stand sentinel in Buckingham Palace. These majestic guardians of light have borne witness to centuries of British history, their silent vigil spanning the reigns of numerous monarchs. Their timber frames have withstood the test of time, a bastion of tradition amidst the ever-evolving urban landscape of London. PVC windows, with their manufactured allure and synthetic shine, might boast of a lifespan of 15 to 20 years, but they are mere ephemera when placed alongside the storied endurance of the wooden sash. In the grand tapestry of architectural evolution, the wooden window is a thread that has remained strong, refusing to be snipped away by the scissors of time.

Twenty-five years ago, I completed a restoration project on several windows located on Crofton Avenue in Dun Laoghaire. This involved removing the windows, repairing the frames and sashes, replacing the glass with laminated units, and performing a comprehensive refurbishment to restore them to as-new condition. The process included applying generous quantities of preservative to prevent decay, installing new hardware, ensuring smooth operation through balancing, and implementing draught-proofing measures. Observing their replacement with PVC sash windows today, it is disheartening to witness the disregard for historical joinery craftsmanship. The proliferation of PVC window manufacturers is detrimental to the preservation of essential joinery skills. These PVC windows will require replacement within 15–30 years, and any warranties are rendered void once the manufacturer ceases operations. In contrast, my restoration work, with proper maintenance, offers significantly longer longevity. PVC windows, however, are irreparable once damaged can't be restored.

Not a sash window companies are the same.

This project only lasted 8 years before I was tasked with making the window safe.

The owner's daughter was in the room this sash was part of.
