Planning approval secured in the Green Belt with unanimous support!

We are delighted to share that Worcester Lloyd has gained planning approval for the renovation, extension and transformation of an existing bungalow at Eaton Bank, Derbyshire.

The site sits within the Green Belt, where development is carefully controlled and any proposal must be considered sensitively in terms of scale, massing, design quality and impact on the surrounding street scene.

Our role was to create a design that gave our clients the home they needed, while respecting the character of the site and its context.

The proposal increases the existing bungalow to create a two-storey family home, sitting comfortably between neighbouring two-storey properties on a sloping site. The design was carefully considered so that the height, scale and massing worked with the surrounding buildings, rather than against them.

High quality facing materials were proposed to ensure the finished home would feel sympathetic to the area, while still creating a contemporary and confident piece of residential architecture.

Worcester Lloyd represented our clients at the planning committee hearing, where the application was considered by local councillors. With a recommendation for approval from the planning officers and 100% backing from the committee, the scheme was not only approved, but applauded by the Chair for being a high-quality design that evoked real interest.

Gaining approval for development of this scale, particularly within the Green Belt, can be difficult. However, with the right design approach, one that responds properly to its site, respects its context and demonstrates clear architectural quality, a great deal can be achieved.

This approval is a brilliant example of what is possible when good design, professional planning judgement and vision from both planning officers and committee members come together.

A fantastic result for our clients and a project we are very much looking forward to seeing progress.

DELIVERING AN ARCHITECTURE MASTERCLASS AT KINGSHOTT SCHOOL HITCHIN, YEAR 9 CAREERS WEEK

Co-Director, Marissa Worcester recently had the absolute pleasure of delivering a Year 9 Careers Week masterclass at Kingshott School, introducing pupils to the world of architecture, design and the built environment.

The session was designed to show that architecture is not just about drawing beautiful buildings. It is about people, safety, access, structure, sustainability, regulations, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The pupils were set a live-style design challenge: to create a social space for Kingshott School that could host their school prom.

Working in teams, they explored:

• drawing to scale
• access and health and safety
• utilities and infrastructure
• practical site considerations
• structural thinking
• branding, posters, tickets and event promotion
• 3D mock-ups and client presentation skills

What impressed me most was the level of imagination, confidence and teamwork shown throughout the session. Each group developed a creative theme, produced visual material and presented their ideas back as if pitching to a real client.

For me, this is exactly why engaging with schools matters.

Architecture brings together creativity and practicality in a way that can open young people’s eyes to so many different career paths - design, engineering, planning, interiors, construction, project management, sustainability and more.

A huge thank you to Kingshott School for inviting me to be part of Careers Week, and to the Year 9 pupils for their energy, enthusiasm and brilliant ideas.

At Worcester Lloyd, we believe strongly in supporting the next generation and helping young people understand the opportunities available within our industry.

The future of architecture depends on inspiring young people early and after this session, I have no doubt there is plenty of talent coming through.

The Next Generation of Architects Need Us.

Now More Than Ever

It is incredibly tough to be an architecture graduate right now.

After years of study, long hours, financial commitment, creative pressure and personal sacrifice, many graduates are stepping out into an industry that feels uncertain, cautious and, at times, difficult to break into.

The current economic climate is making recruitment harder. Practices are watching costs. Projects can feel slower to move. Opportunities can feel fewer.

For students and graduates, that can be deeply disheartening.

But my message to anyone trying to enter this profession is this:

Stick with it.

If architecture is your dream, do not let the current climate convince you that there is no place for you.

Work hard. Keep learning. Keep improving. Keep asking for opportunities. Take the work experience. Take the mentoring. Ask questions. Build your portfolio. Show up with energy, humility and determination.

And most importantly, do not take no as the final answer.

Sometimes a “no” simply means “not yet”, “not here”, or “not in this way.”

Keep going.

But this is not only a message for students.

It is also a message for us as architects, practice owners, directors, mentors and leaders in the industry.

We have a duty to help the next generation.

That means offering work experience placements where we can.

It means giving time for mentoring.

It means supporting students in education.

It means opening the door, even slightly, so that young people can see what the profession really is and believe that they can be part of it.

Because if we do not support the next generation of architects, designers and technologists, then what happens to the future of our industry?

Architecture relies on fresh thinking, curiosity, creativity and ambition.

We cannot afford to let talented young people walk away simply because nobody gave them a chance.

At Worcester Lloyd, we believe in encouraging people at the beginning of their architectural journey. Skills develop. Confidence grows. Experience comes with time.

But passion, work ethic and determination should always be nurtured.

To every architecture student and graduate trying to find your way:

Keep going. Keep pushing. Keep believing.

And to every architect in a position to help:

Let’s make sure we are not just designing buildings, but helping to build the future of our profession too.

Choosing materials for a new home, extension or renovation should feel exciting, not uncertain.

At Worcester Lloyd, we use 3D visuals and video to help our clients see how different materials, colours, textures and styles will actually look before a planning application is submitted.

EARLY DESIGN VISUALISATION SAVES TIME & MONEY DURING THE CONSTRUCTION STAGE

At Worcester Lloyd, we believe clients should be able to see and understand their design clearly before key decisions are made.

That is why we create detailed 3D models and videos of our designs from the outset, allowing our clients to properly visualise how their home, extension, renovation or commercial property will look before a planning application is submitted.

ELLA COPPEN

We’re very pleased to celebrate our most recent team member, Ella Coppen.

Ella joined Worcester Lloyd in January as a RIBA Part I Architectural Designer, and she has already become a valued part of the team.

Since joining us, Ella has been working successfully across a range of residential design projects, supporting the team with existing and proposed plans, elevations, and 3D visuals that help bring our clients’ designs to life.

At Worcester Lloyd, we believe strongly in supporting the next generation of architectural talent and we are encouraging Ella to continue developing her education, confidence, and professional skills as she progresses within architecture.

It has been fantastic to see the quality of Ella’s work developing already, and we’re looking forward to seeing her grow further as part of the Worcester Lloyd team.

VISIT: RIVERSIDE MUSEUM GLASGOW

- One of our most admired architects 1950-2016

Worcester Lloyd co director, Marissa Worcester recently visited the Riverside Museum in Glasgow, designed by Dame Zaha Hadid.

“It was an incredible experience, the building is a real reminder of what can happen when bold architectural vision is followed through with conviction. Its dramatic form and varied roof gradients create a space that feels both dynamic and completely resolved - a design that is ambitious, distinctive and, most importantly, works beautifully.

As an architect, it was inspiring to spend time in a place that reflects such determination in the design process. You can really sense the strength of intent behind it, and I admired the commitment to carrying that vision through to completion. The museum opened in 2011 and brings together more than 3,000 objects from Glasgow’s transport collections, so it is as engaging for those interested in mechanics and engineering as it is for those passionate about architecture and design.

I would thoroughly encourage anyone with an interest in architecture, design or mechanics to go and experience it for themselves.”
