Agarwood Crop Production & Plant Management by small scale (and a few limited) entrepreneurs in Sri Lanka.
Several years of research conducted by biodiversity specialists and university research fellows has shown that Aquilaria plants can be grown in large scale in Badulla, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Kandy, Gampaha, Matale, Nuwara-Eliya, Kalutara, Galle and Matara out of 25 available districts. As it is regarded as a commercial forestry crop, it can progress to its own way with any other crops such as tea, pepper and other cash crops in Sri Lanka. We; most Sri Lankans even do not know that we supply 99% of cinnamon to the rest of the world. However, same as growing of Aquilaria Agarwood is not even dated for at least 5 odd years; where there are slightly over 1 million crops have been grown in elsewhere beyond 300 feet altitude. But, these sellers/ growers (Less than 5 developers in Sri Lanka) have to buy-back these ready-harvest trees after artificial inoculation and should be ready to purchase yield in another 3 to 4 years by tendering cash in SL Rs.30 billion (In US$ 200 miln!!!). Not only the payments for buy-back, but also to process for Agar oil distillery or to commence some Agar by-product factories which are yet to be started in Sri Lanka.
