Employee Profile: Solly Mlondo

Since joining AMTEC in June 2007, Solly Mlondo has witnessed the company’s growth, challenges and development over nearly two decades. Starting as a semi-skilled boilermaker and steel pipe fitter, he was promoted to Site Supervisor in 2010, building his experience across numerous mining and industrial construction projects.

During his 19 years with AMTEC, he has contributed his skills and experience to numerous mining and industrial projects.
Solly specialises in structural, mechanical and piping work across a variety of applications. Having experienced AMTEC’s growth and its survival through the COVID-19 pandemic, he understands the importance of teamwork, adaptability and commitment.

As a supervisor, Solly believes communication is key on site, with safety always a priority. His philosophy is simple: “Coach your people in every aspect.” He believes that sharing knowledge and guiding team members are essential to building capable teams and ensuring that work is carried out safely and effectively.

After 19 years with AMTEC, Solly’s experience and dedication remain an integral part of the company’s story.

A day of Fun at Country Ranch!

Fourteen companies from Witbank, one volleyball court and plenty of friendly competition! The Country Ranch Annual Volleyball Tournament brought everyone together for a day of sporting fun, with AMTEC proudly fielding a team.

There was plenty of action on the court, while off the court, a relaxed atmosphere, good company and a braai made for a great day out. It was an opportunity to step away from the daily work routine, share a few laughs and connect with people from other businesses.

Teamwork is part of everyday life at AMTEC, and events like these are a great way to build relationships beyond the workplace.

A big thank you to Country Ranch and all 14 participating companies for making it a memorable day!

Safety Isn't Just Physical.

October is Mental Health Month, an opportunity to recognise that a true Zero Harm culture looks after more than hands, feet and hard hats; it looks after minds too.

At AMTEC, we encourage our team to check in on each other, speak up when something isn’t right, and know that support is available when it’s needed.

Mental health is part of workplace safety. Because a safe site is one where people feel supported, valued and safe, both physically and mentally.

On an AMTEC construction project, quality is built into the work long before the final inspection.

A pipe installed incorrectly, a weld that doesn't meet specification, incorrect material, or a dimensional error in structural or civil work can create problems much further down the line. Finding those issues after installation can mean rework, delays and unnecessary cost.

That is where quality control plays a vital role.

At each stage of construction, work is checked against the approved drawings, specifications, standards and project requirements. Materials are verified, measurements are checked, installations are inspected and testing is carried out where required. The results are documented so there is a clear record of what was inspected and accepted.

In mining and industrial construction, quality control isn't a paperwork exercise carried out at the end of a project. It is part of the day-to-day construction process.

Check the work. Verify the details. Deal with problems while they can still be fixed.

That is what effective quality control is about.

AMTEC has established an in-house training centre as an integral part of its commitment to developing a skilled, competent and safety-conscious workforce. The centre supports AMTEC’s operational requirements by ensuring that employees receive relevant training aligned with the demands of the mining, construction and industrial environments in which the company operates.

We have developed a broad training programme covering occupational health and safety, supervisory responsibilities and practical workplace competencies. Our training includes First Aid and Fire Fighting, Fire Marshal, Legal Liability, Production Supervisor Roles and Responsibilities, SHE Representative Training, Working at Heights, Confined Spaces, and the Control of Workplace Hazardous Substances.

We also focus on developing operational competence through machine operator training covering TLBs, knuckle cranes, ADTs, Water Bowsers, Excavators, Rollers and tele handlers. This is complemented by Basic and Advanced Rigging, Scaffold Erector and Inspector, Jackhammer, Concrete Hand, Hand and Power Tools, and Stacking and Storing training.

To support our operations across the various mining groups we facilitate online inductions ensuring that our employees are appropriately prepared for site-specific requirements.

Through our in-house training centre, we continue to invest in our people, strengthen competence and safety, and support the high standards of operational excellence that we strive to maintain across AMTEC.

Electrical and instrumentation systems are integral to the safe and efficient operation of mining, industrial and process plant environments.

AMTEC provides specialist Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) services as part of our multidisciplinary project capability, from electrical installation and plant reticulation to instrumentation, MCC construction, PLC programming and SCADA integration.

Our teams are involved across the installation process, including instrumentation supply, installation, calibration and commissioning.

By integrating E&I with our broader construction capabilities, AMTEC can support projects from installation through to commissioning, with safety and compliance built into the process.

Building Integrated Water Management Infrastructure at Exxaro Grootegeluk

As part of Exxaro Coal (Pty) Ltd’s Grootegeluk Integrated Water Management Strategy, AMTEC delivered a turnkey Primary Sediment Management Facility (PSMF) and associated infrastructure.

The project incorporated a broad scope of civil, structural, mechanical and electrical construction, including clarifiers, pump stations, bridges and pipelines. Repairs and upgrades to the Olifantskop conveyance channel were also undertaken to strengthen the overall integration of the water management system.

The project was completed with zero Lost Time Injuries (LTIs), reinforcing AMTEC’s commitment to maintaining a strong safety culture throughout project ex*****on.

The completed infrastructure provides an integrated water treatment and conveyance solution, supporting improved operational efficiency, water recovery and environmental management at Grootegeluk.
