🌿 KNOW YOUR CYCADS – Week 3 🌿

Encephalartos natalensis

Strong, lush, and iconic — Encephalartos natalensis is one of the most widely grown and recognised cycads in South Africa. Native to the forests and valleys of KwaZulu-Natal, this species is loved for its rich dark green foliage, long arching fronds, and impressive trunk growth as it matures.

It is a hardy and adaptable cycad that performs well in many garden conditions, making it a favourite for landscapers and collectors alike. Over time it develops a tall, striking trunk and a full crown of leaves that creates a bold architectural presence in any garden.

🔎 How to recognise it:
Look for long, graceful fronds with narrow, closely spaced leaflets and mostly smooth edges, forming a lush crown.

🌱 Care tip: Plant in well-drained soil, give it full sun to semi-shade, and avoid overwatering — good drainage is key to keeping this species healthy.
