Severe storm warning - tasks
Hi all it's hard to believe that the weather will be turning so heavily tomorrow. 200-300mm of rain forecast but more worrying is the 100km/hr wind.
I am spending today getting ready for it, so I thought I would compile a useful list for preparation.
Drains: make sure all drains are clear of debris & leaves
Gutters and downpipes: clear of debris & leaves
Pools: it's a good day to backwash and rinse, dropping your pool to as low as possible without compromising your filter system.
I am diverting my rain gutters away from pool and into storm water.
Rainwater tanks: I am emptying mine fully today, and also clearing the first flush system.
Outdoor furniture: the rain is going to go sideways, so even undercover furniture is at risk. Move inside or cover if it can't handle getting wet.
Firewood/indoor fireplaces: make sure you have enough dry firewood/fuel inside to last 2-3 days depending on your system.
Gas tanks full.
Chronic medication in good supply.
Road safety: stay home if you can (I have given my cleaning lady Monday off as I don't want her leaving her home - if you are lucky enough to have home help, give them Monday off). Make sure your wipers are in good nick, and fill your tanks. Work from home on Monday if your job allows. Depending on the severity (we never know until we are in the thick of it), schools may close on Monday.
Groceries: stock up today to last until Tues/wed - I personally don't wish to put delivery drivers at risk, and I plan to stay off the road.
Pets: keep them indoors and warm, just like you would like to be.
Loadshedding lights etc: high likelihood of trees taking out power lines etc. Make sure any backup lighting or battery systems are charged in preparation for possible outages. The city is likely to be stretched to capacity in the next few days.
If there's anything else you are doing to prep, drop the comments below. Obviously I am aware that my world is a privileged one, and my thoughts are always with those in less fortunate situations. U turn vouchers and other similar vouchers for places of safety are recommended for those on the streets.
I also realize that I may be over thinking this, but with so many friends and relatives in the Karoo and the Gardenroute, I know the value of prep.
Stay safe and warm everyone!
Be patient and compassionate
