It been a simple winter in our veg patch 🍋🍋‍🟩🫛🥦🥬 Still, totally rewarding. The self seeders doing their thing with me sowing here and there but mostly shuffling things around, building a new house on our spot and finally finding the time to build my greenhouse. Shew! It’s been a crazy year!! Completely weeded the garden from head to toe, changed the irrigation to suit my tomato beds and everywhere else, filled thick with compost, now sowing, planting & mulching. Getting ready for our expectant, hot summer, so mulching is huge! This past weekend we flew into Cape Town and just like that 🪄met my 🍅👸🏻 Jill Jill _organic veggie garden - completely love this platform. Jill is a true permaculturist - every nook and cranny is filled with a vegetable or an extraordinary flower. Instagram without A.I. don’t lie. Jill SO happy to have finally connected with you 🫶✨Otherwise my house looks like a greenhouse, but my tomatoes are up and now trying to harden them gently, and we have little lambs birthing, after all it’s spring time. Sending love and thinking of those dear people in Nepal 🙏🙏🙏❤️

It’s been a mild winter so far 🩵🌱 Have been taking it easy in the veggie garden that’s why you simply cannot help adore the self seeders like Red Mustard leaf, kale and lettuce with poppies coming up amongst them. A beautiful time of year with our stream trickling over and Heather in bloom - tiny fairy bells everywhere - farm walks with our dogs and friends are such a pleasure. Otherwise still harvesting Sugar Snap peas - THE best, still snacking on pecans, yet to cook up the Turks Turban pumpkin, pawpaws slowly growing larger, lots of lemons and harvesting dried beans - for both food and seed. A little bit of heaven 🧡 To my Northern Hemisphere Insta friends - you guys have been so on my mind - hope you’re all adapting to the hot weather ❤️

If you are wondering what veggies and herbs to sow and plant in July in South Africa - here's a list. Remember this is for an open pollinated vegetable garden. Love winter, and especially lettuce 🥬 you sow the seed in a good composted soil and they almost immediately pop up like weeds 😊

Afternoon haul of ginger 🫚🤎 We LOVE ginger, wish we could grow it abundantly down here on the Garden Route of SA, but it prefers a warm sub tropical climate. Going to enjoy these luscious rhizomes with our morning tonic. I will freeze most of them and grate - one way to preserve and not lose its bioactive compounds. Otherwise the chickens are laying lots of beautiful eggs again - they went through a lull, the onions have popped up happily, picked some sugar snap peas for our salad tonight - they are a treat, especially when they’re your very own ☺️ and there are plenty of baby finger bananas forming - they are continuously fed by our house’s grey water - a system that works perfectly 🍌🌱💪

It’s a pretty time of year.

🫛🍋🥬 Limes, lemons, sugar snap peas, beans, chilli’s and the last sweet peppers and guavadillas, growing amongst lettuce, spinach, growing brassicas and plenty of herbs - after all it is winter, and the leaf’s - love the cool season.

The aloes are spectacular, the bee’s are buzzing - have to share their splendour. V busy studying their thorn intel - yes every aloe has a different thorn colour variation 🤩

Been a while 🌧️⛈️🌊🌧️ another storm pulled in which caused severe flooding in our area - 2 big rain storms one after the other, we came out ok - a few trees down, electricity out for 21 days, but our dams are over flowing - the entire Garden Route river system fresh and renewed 🩵 mass water may be devastating, but such a blessing too.

Decided to harvest my 2026 turmeric🤩🫚🧡 With over 500mm rainfall within a month, the turmeric seemed to have died back faster (100% yellowed leaves). I have had better harvests, but still a decent amount for us to use and to share. Snapped the rhizomes off the mother root - the rhizomes we shall grate and drink with our morning tonic (our favourite natural inflammatory) and the mother roots - plant.

Otherwise the aloes are beginning to bloom masses of fiery colour, attracting the birds and bees. We now have 6 new sweet springy baby lambs and harvesting sweet peppers, Rattlesnake beans, snap peas, chillies, spinach, lettuce, coriander, thyme, oregano, kale and red mustard.

The peacan nuts are ripening 👏 When their leather jackets begin splitting it’s a sure sign to harvest quickly before the baboons get the them!

This morning captured the first Rosella Bangkok flower bud, mulched the Elephant garlic bed and harvested a good amount of peppers to whizz up for another chilli sauce - the family’s favourite go to 🌶️🥰 constantly stockpiling!

Our animals of course, love Saturdays too 🐾☺️ - a day always well spent in the garden 💚🌱

The tomatoes are still giving 🍅❤️ The Costalatu Fiorentino’s are resilient - as long as you keep feeding them - they give back. A kelp feed is my go to for everything and of course topping up with compost and mulching. Lots of chillies, winter seedlings, lemongrass, flowering lemon verbena and kale popping up all over.

Knocked down my old greenhouse and building a new one!! Super excited 🤩 it’s a timeous affair. Given these beautiful old Cape Dutch windows and painting them funky colours. July is D-month. With a birthday stash - bought the roofing, now got to get my hubby to build the basic structure.

Yes, I do absolutely love sowing and planting by the moon in an open pollinated garden, but it would be glorious to get my summer seed sown early in winter so I get a longer harvest.
